Box Score
HAVERFORD, Pa. – In what has turned into a common occurrence this fall, freshman defender
Lauren Johnson (Morristown, N.J./Morristown-Beard) made her presence felt on the offensive end of the field, finding sophomore
Sarah Yeager (Westport, Conn./Staples) for the game-winning goal off a corner kick in the 88th minute to send visiting Gettysburg College to a 2-1 victory over Haverford College in Centennial Conference women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon. Gettysburg improved to 3-1-3 overall on the fall and remained unbeaten in conference play at 2-0, while the Fords dropped to 3-5 and 0-1 in the CC.
Despite having only seven collegiate contests under her belt, Johnson has proved to be one of the team's most steadfast defenders, but perhaps her most valuable contributions have come on corner kicks this season. She has taken the majority of corner kicks this fall and has turned three of those attempts into assists, including finding Yeager for the second time this season on Saturday.
With the score tied 1-1 with under five minutes remaining, Gettysburg mounted an offensive attack resulting in a shot by junior
Kelly Vigna (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) and a save by Ford goalkeeper Lindsay Festa. Over the next three minutes, the Bullets attempted three corners, all by Johnson, with the first two attempts getting blocked by defenders. The third time was the charm, however, as the first-year's liner into the box caromed off Yeager's head for the eventual game-winner at 87:20.
Haverford led the match statistically in shots (14-10) and corner kicks (5-3) and took the lead initially on a rebound goal by Michele Buonora at 9:12. Gettysburg had the answer just under three minutes later as junior
Kerry McKenna (Sharon, Conn./Kent School) kicked in her second goal in her last three contests at 12:09. It was the Bullet junior's third goal of the fall.
The Fords pressed the offensive with nine second-half shots, but only one was on target, leading to senior
Danielle St. Pierre's (Londonderry, N.H./Trinity) only save of the second half at 78:38. Haverford managed two shots in the final minutes, but both were wide of the mark.
McKenna paced Gettysburg's offense with four shots, while Yeager managed a pair of attempts. St. Pierre made three saves to earn the win.
The Bullets will aim to continue their hot start with another conference match next Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Franklin & Marshall College. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
