YORK, Pa. – Senior Savannah Ruth (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) poured in three goals and one assist, classmate Emily Harwood (Rockville, Md./Magruder) posted two goals and two assists, and junior Lexie Hearn (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) scored a pair of goals as the Gettysburg College field hockey team rolled by host York (Pa.) College, winning 8-1 in a non-conference tilt Wednesday afternoon.
It was the second career hat trick for Ruth, who ironically recorded her other three-goal output against York last season. Her seven points marked a career-high.
Harwood, whose six points were also a career-high, staked Gettysburg (2-0) to a 4-0 lead 15 minutes into the game. She had a hand in each of the team's first four goals, scoring unassisted 5:54 in before assisting on tallies from Ruth and Hearn. Her second goal of the game, this one assisted by Ruth, made it 4-0 with 20:05 on the clock.
The Bullets increased their lead to 6-0 at the half. Ruth scored an assisted goal with 16:10 showing before Hearn accepted a feed from junior Nina Emala (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) and potted her second tally of the game. Gettysburg held a whopping 26-1 advantage in shots in the opening period.
Ruth's third goal came just 3:11 into the second half off an assist from sophomore Annie Marosits (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes). The Spartans (1-1) broke up the shutout with 28:17 left before Marosits set the final score at the 16:44 mark, converting a pass from classmate Caroline Tamposi (Temple, N.H./Brooks School [Mass.]).
For the game, the Bullets out-shot the Spartans 40-7.
Junior Christina Anderson (Dunkirk, Md./The Calverton School) had a light day in goal for Gettysburg and finished with one save. Claire Rekitzke stopped 19 shots for York.
The Bullets take five days off before playing their home opener on Tuesday, when they take on Catholic University at 4:30 p.m.
