Volleyball Drops Two on Final Day of Battlefield Classic

GETTYSBURG, Va. – The Gettysburg College volleyball team came up short in its bid to close another Battlefield Classic undefeated, dropping a pair of matches inside Bream Gym on Saturday. Eastern University shut down the Bullets in three sets en route to a perfect 4-0 record in the event, while the second match of the day witnessed the hosts fall in a heartbreaking five-set decision to Frostburg State University.

Eastern (6-0) ended a seven-match winning streak by Gettysburg (5-3) at its own tournament with scores of 25-18, 25-23, and 25-17. The Eagles dominated net play to the tune of a .361 attack percentage and 42 kills, paced by Kara Hildebrand's 14 and Courtney Reinhold's 11. Junior Kristina Mercier (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) accounted for most of the Bullets' offense with 11 kills, while Kate Yoder (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) tallied five. Sophomore Amanda Krampf (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) became the 15th player in school history to record 1,000 career digs with her first up in the opening set. She finished with six digs overall and added 21 assists and a pair of aces.

In the afternoon, Frostburg jumped out initially with a 25-22 decision in the opening contest. Gettysburg took a 2-1 lead following 25-22 and 25-21 victories in the second and third sets, respectively, but the Bobcats (8-1) bounced back with a vengeance, posting a 25-10 victory in the fourth frame and closing with a 15-8 win in the fifth and decisive set.

Krampf had a hand in all aspects of the match for Gettysburg, finishing with eight kills, 26 assists, and 24 digs. She was the only Bullet named to the all-tournament team after averaging 1.21 kills, 6.71 assists, and 3.57 digs over four matches. Mercier tallied a team-high nine kills, while Yoder came up with eight kills, nine digs, and six total blocks. Senior Meghan McConville (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) recorded seven kills and 14 digs for the hosts and freshman Jamie Huffman (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) had a productive contest with seven kills and three digs.

Eastern and Salisbury University each finished 4-0 on the weekend and had a pair of all-tournament representatives. Joining Krampf with all-tournament recognition were Courtney Reinhold and Maria Horning (Eastern), Nicole Massarelli and Jaime Marzocchi (Salisbury), Amanda Lewis (Johns Hopkins University), Brooke Winterling (Frostburg), Audrey O'Donnell (Richard Stockton College), Brittney Horton (SUNY Cortland), Paige Tanner (Elizabethtown College), Ludmila Mounty-Weinstock (Gallaudet University), and Ashley Mathis (Neumann College).

Gettysburg returns to action next weekend when it hosts the Blast Tournament inside Bream Gym on Sept. 12-13. The Bullets will be joined by Daemen College, St. Vincent College, and Carnegie Mellon University at the event which will get underway at 3 p.m. on Friday.
