Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. –Gettysburg College and St. Mary's (Md.) College battled each other and the elements in a women's soccer match at Clark Field with the two teams settling for a 1-1 draw amidst a torrential downpour courtesy of Tropical Storm Hanna on Saturday afternoon.

With rain and wind whipping at their heels, the two squads took to the turf and chased each other up and down for the first 45 minutes with neither side gaining a clear advantage. St. Mary's (2-0-1) struck the first blow just over 30 seconds into the final period as Sophia Esparza picked up the match's initial score with a blast from just outside the box.

Trailing with under 10 minutes to go, Gettysburg (1-0-2) made a push for the scoring column by forcing a corner kick in the 84th minute. The ensuing corner shot was kicked back out by the Seahawk defense, but right to freshman Jenna Stickle (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) who promptly returned the ball inside the box. Sophomore Sarah Yeager (Westport, Conn./Staples) managed to direct the ball out in front to classmate Mara Dold (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) for the equalizer at 83:48. The tally was the first career score for Dold.

The overtime periods were quiet as the two soaked and exhausted squads each managed a solitary shot in the vicinity of the goal.

Senior keeper Danielle St. Pierre (Londonderry, N.H./Trinity) made four saves for Gettysburg, while Marie Oben tallied a trio of stops for St. Mary's. Esparza and Bullet sophomore Casey Harper (Ocean View, N.J./Ocean City) led all players with four shot attempts a piece.

Gettysburg returns to action next Saturday (Sept. 13) with a non-conference road trip to Juniata College. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
