GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore center Andrew Powers (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed six rebounds while senior guard Corey Dorsey (Frederick, Md./St. John's at Prospect Hall) dropped in 21 points as the Gettysburg College men's basketball team used a pair of late runs to defeat Haverford College 71-62 in a Centennial Conference tilt Tuesday evening in Bream Gymnasium.

Gettysburg (9-2, 4-1 CC), which won its fifth game in a row and its 15th straight home game, now finds itself locked in a three-way tie for first place in the conference standings thanks to McDaniel's victory over No. 21 Franklin & Marshall Tuesday night. Johns Hopkins, 3-1 in conference play entering the night, was still in action against Dickinson at press time.

After trailing by as much as eight, Haverford (5-6, 2-3 CC) pulled to within a bucket (45-43) on a Matthew Stitt free throw with 9:14 left. But that's when Dorsey, who scored 19 of his points in the second half, got hot, scoring nine straight points to fuel a 9-2 Bullet run and give his team a nine-point cushion (54-45) with 6:47 remaining. Dorsey kicked off the surge with a four-point play, draining one of his four treys from the right elbow. He followed up with a three from the left wing, then connected on a pair of free throws.

The Fords cut the gap to three after a 9-3 surge. Sam Permutt scored six points along the way, including a lay-up that made it 57-54 with 3:25 showing. However, the Bullets responded with a 10-0 run over the next 2:20 to break the game open. Dorsey got things rolling once again, slashing down the lane and converting a conventional three-play with 3:16 left. The Fords went 0-for-4 from the field and missed the front end of a 1-and-1 during the decisive stretch.

Sophomore forward Kevin Kennedy (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard), making his second collegiate start, added 14 points and five rebounds for the Bullets while shooting 5-for-7, including 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. Senior guard Dan Capkin (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) netted 11 points and tied a career-high with six assists for Gettysburg, which received the most votes among “Others receiving votes” in the latest D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll.

Permutt paced the Fords with 12 points and nine rebounds while Alex Schwada nailed 4-of-6 three-pointers en route to an identical 12-point night. Brent Anderson and Greg Rosnick each tallied 10 points.
A back-and-forth first half featured six ties and eight lead changes, with neither team leading by more than four. Permutt gave Haverford its final lead of the night (20-18) on a lay-up with 6:24 on the clock before Dorsey tied it up with a lay-in at the 4:38 mark. Schwada drilled a trifecta to tied it up with 30 seconds to go before Capkin delivered a jumper from the left baseline at the buzzer, giving the Bullets a lead (30-28) they would not relinquish.

After shooting 52.4 percent in the first half, Haverford cooled down to 40.6 in the second stanza to finish at 45.3 percent. However, the Fords managed only a 7-for-13 night at the foul line while the Bullets were 13-of-19 at the charity stripe. Gettysburg shot 48.1 percent from the field.

The Bullets play their second game of a three-game homestand on Thursday, when they face Swarthmore College in another Centennial Conference affair, tipping off at 8 p.m. in the nightcap of a men's-women's doubleheader against the Garnet.
