BALTIMORE, Md. – Johns Hopkins University stymied Gettysburg College into shooting its second-lowest percentage of the season on Tuesday night as the host Blue Jays sent the visiting Bullets packing with a 62-50 loss in Centennial Conference women's basketball action in Goldfarb Gym. The setback drops Gettysburg to 6-7 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
Gettysburg converted 30.6 percent of its field goal attempts on the night, just slightly above the 30-percent clip it shot in a five-point victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology on Dec. 20. Despite the off-shooting night, the Bullets kept the game within reach and trailed by just four points (15-11) following a free throw by sophomore
Mary Spicer (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) at 10:03. That would be as close as the visitors would get for the next 15 minutes as Johns Hopkins (5-7, 3-2 CC) went up by as many as 16 in the opening stanza before settling for a 32-20 lead at the break.
Gettysburg looked to be gaining momentum early in the second period as sophomore
Caitlin Moser (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) connected on a lay-up and a pair of free throws and junior
Courtney Fields (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) nailed a three-pointer to close the gap to 35-30 at 14:09.
Johns Hopkins responded quickly with a 6-0 run to push the lead back to double-digits and after Fields cut the deficit back to nine with a lay-up, the Blue Jays tacked on another five points and went on to lead by at least as many as 15 in the final 10 minutes of play.
Moser led the Bullets with 15 points, including nine tallies from the charity stripe. Junior
Allie Drechsler (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) netted 14 points and was 2-of-3 from distance, while Spicer finished with nine points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Fields led the rebounding department with eight for Gettysburg.
Johns Hopkins owned a 47-36 edge on the glass thanks to double-double efforts from Lyndsay Burton and Kristin Phillips. Burton led all scorers with 22 points on 10-of-20 shooting from the floor and grabbed 10 boards, while Phillips chipped in with 13 points and 10 rebounds, including six caroms on the offensive end.
Gettysburg will look to rebound in the friendly confines of Bream Gym against Swarthmore College (7-6, 4-2 CC) on Thursday, Jan. 15, at 6 p.m.
