Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore center
Andrew Powers (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) recorded his third double-double of the season, posting 23 points and 10 rebounds as the Gettysburg College men's basketball team rolled to its sixth straight win, knocking off Swarthmore College 66-51 in a Centennial Conference showdown.
With the win, the Bullets (10-2, 5-1 CC) extended their home winning streak to 16, the team's longest since a 16-gamer from 1960-62.
Gettysburg, which led from start to finish, also received 11 points, six rebounds, and five assists from senior guard
Dan Capkin (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion). Senior guard
Corey Dorsey (Frederick, Md./St. John's at Prospect Hall) added 10 points and a career-high four steals while senior forward
Joe Spierenburg (Chambersburg, Pa./St. Maria Goretti [Md.]) blocked four shots.
Danny Walker paced Swarthmore (1-11, 0-6 CC) with 20 points while Marc Rogalski added 11 points and seven rebounds. Raul Ordonez also had seven boards for the Garnet, which dropped its ninth straight game.
Powers shot 11-of-14 from the field and tied his season-high scoring total. He also scored 23 points in against Dickinson and Widener.
The Bullets never led by more than eight in the first half, first with 11:50 left following a three-pointer from junior guard
Brendan Hager (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga), and later on a Powers lay-up with 4:34 showing. The Garnet kept it close, however, and trailed by only a point on three occasions. After Powers' lay-up, Swarthmore answered with a 7-0 run to make it 27-26 with 2:07 to go. But that's when Capkin nailed a three-pointer and dropped in a lay-up to push the lead to six before Walker converted a lay-up three seconds before the horn to make it 32-28 at the break.
Gettysburg scored the first six points of the second half as its lead hit double figures (38-28). Ordonez snapped the run with a lay-up, and after a Walker bucket the Bullets led 41-32 with 14:22 left. But after a Powers lay-in 18 seconds later, Gettysburg would lead by double digits the rest of the night, extending its advantage to as much as 15.
The Bullets, who entered the game ranked seventh in Division III in field-goal percentage defense, held Swarthmore to 33.9 percent shooting from the field. The Garnet made just 4-of-16 three-pointers. Gettysburg shot 50.0 percent for the game despite making only three of 17 three-point attempts.
The win was No. 275 at Gettysburg for head coach
George Petrie.
The Bullets complete their five-day, three-game homestand on Saturday, when they take on Ursinus College at 2 p.m. in another Centennial Conference match-up.
