GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College women's basketball team put up its best performance of the season against Swarthmore College on Thursday night, netting season highs for points, rebounding margin, and assists in an 87-56 Centennial Conference victory in Bream Gym. Four players reached double-figures for the Bullets, led by sophomore
Caitlin Moser's (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) 21.
Gettysburg (7-7, 4-3 CC) shot a blistering 52.9 percent (37-of-70) from the floor against Swarthmore (7-7, 4-3 CC), grabbed 20 more rebounds (50-30), and dished out 27 assists, all season bests. Moser's offensive output came via an efficient night from the floor as the sophomore hit 9-of-15 field goals and 3-of-4 free throws, adding seven rebounds and two blocked shots. She was joined in double-figures by freshmen
Julie McGrory (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) and
Sara Kinsley (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe), who each poured in a career-high 12 points, and sophomore
Mary Spicer (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy), who tacked on 11 points.
The lead never changed hands in the contest, but it was still a battle early as Gettysburg went ahead by as many as seven (18-11) at 11:33 only to see Swarthmore whittle the margin down to 22-19 with 6:42 left in the opening half. The key point in the stanza occurred just 10 seconds later as the conference's leading scorer and rebounder, Swarthmore's Kathryn Stockbower, picked up her third personal foul and had to watch the remainder of the half from the bench.
With Stockbower watching from the sidelines, the Bullets went on the attack and reeled off a 20-6 run to close the period. A three-pointer by junior
Courtney Fields (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) and a lay-up by Kinsley capped the half, giving the hosts a 42-25 advantage.
Swarthmore started a comeback in the second half as a rejuvenated Stockbower netted five points to help the Garnet close to 44-34 just over three minutes in. Gettysburg answered with 10 of the next 12 points, closing with a putback by Kinsley at 13:34 to push the lead to 54-36. The lead dipped to a dozen points (60-48) at 9:39 before the Bullets closed the game on an impressive 25-8 run.
Kinsley finished 6-of-8 from the field with three assists and added a team-high eight rebounds. McGrory was even better from the field at 5-for-6, including 2-for-2 from deep, and added four rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals. Spicer added four boards and four assists to her 5-of-9 performance.
Three Bullets just missed double-figures. Fields tallied nine points, four boards, five assists, and two steals, while junior
Allie Drechsler (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) finished with eight points, five boards, and a game-high six assists. Senior
Margaret White (Burke, Va./James W. Robinson) collected seven points and dished out four assists, and moved into a tie for fourth on Gettysburg's all-time list with 110 career three-pointers.
Stockbower finished with her 13th double-double of the season with game highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds. She was 6-of-12 from the floor and 10-of-13 from the charity stripe. Ceylan Bodur added 14 points and four rebounds.
