GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore center Andrew Powers (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) scored a game-high 28 points while senior guard Corey Dorsey (Frederick, Md./St. John's at Prospect Hall) poured in a career-high 26 points as Gettysburg rallied late for a thrilling 73-68 victory over Ursinus College in Centennial Conference men's basketball action at a lively Bream Gymnasium.

With the win, Gettysburg's seventh straight, the Bullets (11-2, 6-1 CC) buried an 11-game losing streak against the Bears, beating Ursinus for the first time since Jan. 19, 2005. Gettysburg also extended its home winning streak to 17, its longest since a 34-game run from 1936-40.

Ursinus (7-7, 3-4 CC), which lost for the sixth time in its last seven games, was led by senior guard John Noonan, who scored 22 points.

Powers also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and went 11-for-13 at the foul line to set a career-high for foul shots made. Dorsey tied a career-high for three-pointers, going 5-for-10 from beyond the arc, and was 5-for-5 at the foul line.

A three-pointer from junior guard Remy Cousart gave the Bears a 59-52 lead with 8:13 left. But after taking a timeout, the Bullets rattled off the next 12 points to assume a 64-59 advantage with 3:50 remaining. In the meantime, Gettysburg forced Ursinus into three missed shots and a pair of turnovers.

Dorsey started the rally with a pair of free throws before Powers knocked down two foul shots of his own with 7:09 left, pulling Gettysburg to within three (59-56). Dorsey followed up with back-to-back treys, his final two of the game, 2:30 apart to give his team the lead (62-59) for good with 4:30 to go.

Sophomore forward Kevin Kennedy (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) capped the run with a jumper at the 3:50 mark before Cousart nailed a three with 3:17 left. But the Bullets came right back with an 8-0 burst to open up a 70-62 lead with 2:08 on the clock. Dorsey opened the spurt with a pair of free throws before Powers scored four straight on a lay-up and a pair of foul shots.

The Bears cut the lead to five when junior forward Matt Howell converted a conventional three-point play with 1:58 left. Both teams came up empty on the their next two possessions, with Gettysburg missing a three and committing a turnover and Noonan missing a pair of shots, including an NBA-range three with just over a minute left.

After Noonan's second miss, Powers grabbed the rebound and was fouled before connecting on 1-of-2 free throws with 24 ticks showing to make it 71-65. Noonan then used a pump-fake to free himself up for a three from the right elbow, making it a one-possession game with 18 seconds left.

The Bears put Powers back on the free throw line, but he was true on both attempts to put the game on ice.

Senior guard Dan Capkin (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) added 11 points and three steals for Gettysburg while backcourt mate Chris Nevolo (Neshanic Station, N.J./Somerville) handed out five assists. The Bullets were held to 34.9 percent shooting but allowed Ursinus few extra scoring opportunities.

The Bears shot 45.3 percent from the field, and although the overall rebounds were even (36-36), Ursinus was outrebounded 12-5 on the offensive glass and did not score any second-chance points. Four of Kennedy's five rebounds came at the offensive end while three of Dorsey's four boards were offensive.

Gettysburg committed a season-low nine turnovers and had its second-best performance of the year at the foul line, making 82.6 percent (19-of-23) of its charity chucks.

Cousart finished with 15 points, eight rebounds, and four assists while Howell netted 12 points.

The Bullets led for nearly the entire first half and enjoyed their largest lead of the day following a 13-5 run that gave the team a 22-13 advantage with 12:42 to go. The two teams then traded runs, with Ursinus going on a 12-4 surge to pull to within one (26-25) with 7:19 left before Gettysburg used a 5-0 spurt to push the lead back to six with 4:28 remaining. But the Bears blanked the Bullets over the remainder of the half while scoring the final eight points. A Noonan lay-up with 59 seconds left gave Ursinus just its second lead of the game and the Bears took a 33-31 edge into the locker room.

Ursinus came out hot at the start of the second half, and an 11-4 run gave the visitors their largest lead of the game (44-35) with 16:52 left. The Bears went 3-for-3 from the field and 5-for-5 from the line to start the stanza.

Nevolo stemmed the Ursinus run with a three-pointer with 16:40 to go, and midway through the half the Bullets used a 10-3 run to take the lead (50-49) after a Dorsey tip-in. The lead would change three more times over the next 1:42 before the Bears went on an 8-0 run to open up its 59-52 lead. Ursinus held the Bullets scoreless over a 3:50 span before Dorsey's free throws with 7:40 left.

Gettysburg returns to Centennial Conference action on Wednesday, when it visits Franklin & Marshall College at 7:30 p.m. in a match-up featuring a pair of teams locked in a three-way tie for first place in the league standings. Gettysburg, F&M, and McDaniel all sport 6-1 conference ledgers.
