Box Score

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Gettysburg committed a season-high 28 turnovers and the 22nd-ranked Bullets suffered a 56-45 setback at Haverford College in Centennial Conference men's basketball action Saturday afternoon.

Haverford (6-9, 3-6 CC), which won for the first time in six games, held the Bullets to 34.1 percent shooting while Gettysburg (12-3, 7-2 CC) saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end.

The loss spoiled the 500th game coached at Gettysburg for head coach George Petrie. He is now just five games from passing Hen Bream for the most games coached in program history.

Senior guard Dan Capkin (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) led the Bullets with a game-high 16 points despite sitting a large portion of the second half with foul trouble. Classmate Corey Dorsey (Frederick, Md./St. John's at Prospect Hall) added nine points while sophomore center Andrew Powers (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) grabbed seven rebounds and was held to eight points, his second-lowest scoring output of the season.

Senior forward Brent Anderson led the Fords with 15 points while sophomore forward Sam Permutt and junior guard Andrew Palmer contributed eight points apiece.

The Bullets struggled against Haverford's 1-3-1 zone defense and shot just 36.8 percent in the first half, which featured four ties and eight lead changes. Gettysburg, which committed 14 turnovers in each period, never led by more than two in the first half, when a Powers jumper made it 15-13 with 4:55 to go. That turned out to be the team's final lead of the period, as the Fords outscored the Bullets 7-2 over the remainder of the half to take a 20-17 edge into the locker room.

Gettysburg's 17 points marked a season-low for one half. Haverford shot just 34.6 percent from the field in the first period.

Capkin scored five quick points at the start of the second half, canning a three-pointer and converting a fast-break lay-up to give his team a 22-20 lead with 18:26 on the clock. But he was forced to sit after getting whistled for his third foul with 18:03 remaining, and the Bullets would manage only one field goal for an eight-and-a-half minute stretch and went through a 6:27 scoring drought midway through the period. However, Dorsey snapped the dry spell with a trey from the left wing, and Gettysburg trailed just 32-30 with 9:49 left. But the Bullets continued to struggle offensively down the stretch and scored only two more field goals the rest of the way.

The Fords scored the next five points to open up a seven-point lead with 8:07 to go. It was a five-point game when senior guard Alex Schwada nailed a huge bucket for Haverford, just beating the shot clock with a three from the right elbow to make it 44-36 with 2:32 showing. Gettysburg was unable to get the deficit under seven the rest of the way, as the Fords made eight of their final 10 free throws.

Haverford also struggled offensively, shooting just 37.0 percent from the field and going 20-for-30 from the foul line. The Bullets made just 5-of-23 three-pointers and was 12-for-20 at the free-throw line.

Gettysburg returns to action on Monday, when it hosts Johns Hopkins University in another Centennial Conference match-up starting at 8 p.m.
