CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Gettysburg pulled away late to defeat host Washington (Md.) College 73-69 in a tight Centennial Conference men's basketball game Wednesday evening.

The Bullets (7-2, 2-1 CC) led just 63-58 with 3:47 left before a 7-1 run gave the Bullets some breathing room at 70-59 with 1:55 to go. The Shoremen (4-6, 1-2 CC) pulled to within four (71-67) with 23 seconds remaining following a Kevin Breslin three-pointer, but junior guard Brendan Hager (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) iced the game with a pair of free throws six seconds later. Alan Kines dropped in a lay-up with two seconds left to set the final score.

Sophomore center Andrew Powers (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) led Gettysburg with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting but fouled out on an offensive foul with 3:57 left. Senior forward Joe Spierenburg (Chambersburg, Pa./St. Maria Goretti [Md.]) added 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Bullets received a big lift from its bench, which scored a season-high 21 points. Sophomore guard Paul Crone (Braddock Heights, Md./Middletown) scored all of his career-high 10 points in the first half while sophomore center Chip Naddaff (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) contributed career-highs of six points and four rebounds. Sophomore forward Kevin Kennedy (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) chipped in with six points and a career-high nine rebounds while Hager scored five points.

Kines scored a game-high 22 points while Tim Kohlrus (14) and Breslin (12) also reached double figures for Washington. Scott Hampton grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

A nip-and-tuck first half featured one tie and seven lead changes. However, the Shoremen managed to rally from a pair of small deficits, first erasing a six-point lead with 5:16 left in the period, then wiping out a seven-point handicap late in the half. The Bullets led 30-23 with 2:23 remaining following a pair of free throws from senior guard Chris Nevolo (Neshanic Station, N.J./Somerville), but the Shoremen made their last four field goal attempts of the half, including a trio of three-pointers, to close the period on a 13-4 run. Kines scored eight of Washington's points during the run, including a trey with two seconds left that put the hosts up 36-34 at the break.

Kines led all scorers with 13 first-half points while Powers and Crone each notched 10. Powers, however, picked up his third foul with 1:23 left and sat out the first 5:17 of the second half.

Washington held its lead for the opening 4:20 of the second period before the Bullets used a 5-0 spurt, capped by a jumper from senior guard Corey Dorsey (Frederick, Md./St. John's at Prospect Hall), to go back in front. Dorsey's bucket marked the first of five lead changes over a 3:19 stretch, but Powers provided a spark two minutes after reentering the game. He put his team in front to stay and kicked off a 7-0 Gettysburg run, converting a lay-up with 11:59 on the clock to make it 49-48.

Powers followed up with a conventional three-point play on a fastbreak lay-up before a Spierenburg bucket put the Bullets up 54-48 with 11:02 to play. The Shoremen scored the next four points to pull to within two, but Gettysburg used a 7-0 run to gain its first double-digit lead (63-53) with 5:46 to go. But Kines scored the next five points to cut the deficit in half.

Gettysburg returns to Centennial Conference action on Saturday, when it visits Muhlenberg College at 2 p.m.
