SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Gettysburg College women's basketball team picked up a big win in its final regular season road trip of the year, pushing past host Swarthmore College 78-65 in a Centennial Conference contest at Tarble Pavilion on Saturday, Feb. 14. Sophomore
Caitlin Moser (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) led the Bullets with a game-high 25 points.
Gettysburg (13-10, 10-6 CC) needed a victory to stay in the mix for a conference playoff spot and the Bullets accomplished their goal with a hot shooting night from the floor, hitting 26-of-56 field goal attempts (46.4 percent) and tying a season high with 22 made free throws. Moser led the charge with her sixth 20-point performance of the season. She finished 9-of-14 from the floor and 7-of-10 from the charity stripe and added five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Sophomore
Mary Spicer (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) also hit the scorebook for double-figures for the second consecutive game, tallying 16 points on the strength of a 9-for-11 performance at the free throw line. She also tallied four assists and three steals.
The teams exchanged buckets for most of the opening period until back-to-back scores by freshmen
Sara Kinsley (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) and
Julie McGrory (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) gave Gettysburg a 20-14 lead with 10 minutes to go before the half. Swarthmore (11-12, 8-8 CC) cut into the margin with six of the next eight points to pull to 22-20, but the Bullets answered with a 6-0 spurt to jump ahead by eight (28-20) with 4:39 to play.
Gettysburg's advantage grew to as many as nine (33-24) and the visitors entered the break with a 36-28 lead.
In the final period, Gettysburg attempted more free throws (25) than field goals (20) and was efficient on both counts, nailing 19 of the former and 11 of the latter. Spicer handled the charity work with all of her makes and attempts in the second half, while Moser was 5-for-5 from the field and 6-of-8 at the line. The Bullets quickly took their lead to double-digits (41-30) on a lay-up by junior
Courtney Fields (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) at 16:51.
The Garnet stuck around and closed the gap to just five points (51-46) at 10:34 following an 8-1 run. That would be as close as the hosts would get the rest of the way, as Gettysburg answered with seven straight points, capped by a three-pointer by senior
Margaret White (Burke, Va./James W. Robinson) with under nine minutes to play. The margin never dipped below 10 the rest of the way.
Fields finished with six points and pulled down a season-high 10 rebounds for Gettysburg, while junior
Allie Drechsler (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) scored eight points and dished out three assists. Freshman
Lauren Dadigan (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and White each scored six points, the latter's coming on a pair of three-pointers.
Kathryn Stockbower led Swarthmore with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Ceylan Bodur added 10 points, while Pamela Costello, Melissa Grigsby, and Genny Pezzola each turned in eight tallies.
