CARLISLE, Pa. – Sophomore center
Andrew Powers (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) scored a game-high 26 points and Gettysburg recorded a 76-66 Centennial Conference victory at Dickinson College Wednesday evening in the Kline Center.
The Bullets (14-5, 9-4 CC), who shot a season-best 55.6% (10-of-18) from three-point range, led 40-30 at halftime and never relinquished their lead in the second half.
Gettysburg's starting lineup accounted for 64 points, as three other starters joined Powers in double figures. Senior guard
Dan Capkin (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) added 15 points and shot 4-for-6 from three-point range while senior
Corey Dorsey (Frederick, Md./St. John's at Prospect Hall) added 13 points, shooting 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. Senior guard
Chris Nevolo (Neshanic Station, N.J./Somerville) scored 10 points, burying his only two three-point attempts, and handed out five assists.
The game marked No. 504 at Gettysburg for head coach
George Petrie, who has now tied Hen Bream for the most games coached in program history.
Powers shot 9-for-19 from the field and was 7-for-11 at the free-throw line. His 26 points marked his second-highest scoring output of the season, behind only his 28-point game against Ursinus on Jan. 17.
Kizmahr Grell led Dickinson (9-10, 3-10 CC) with 20 points while Tom Leszczynski added 13 points and eight rebounds. Cory Kenny led all players with 10 rebounds.
The first half included two ties and four lead changes, but the Bullets took the lead for good on a
Chip Naddaff (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) lay-up with 7:35 left in the opening half, and a Nevolo trey 45 seconds later gave the visitors a 22-18 advantage. Gettysburg used a 13-4 run shortly before the end of the half to open up a 12-point lead, getting a trio of three-pointers along the way, and led 40-30 at the half. Dorsey opened the spurt with a three-pointer, and Capkin made two more along the way.
The Red Devils stayed within striking in the second half, but were unable to reduce the deficit under seven until a Chris Harrington three-pointer with 55 seconds left made it 72-66. But the Bullets made their final four foul shots, with Nevolo and sophomore forward
Kevin Kennedy (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) each going 2-for-2, while Dickinson committed a turnover and missed a three-pointer on its final two possessions.
Gettysburg returns home on Saturday, when it takes on Muhlenberg College at 2 p.m. in another Centennial Conference tilt.
