Heidi Bitter (Darien, Conn./Westminster) poured in a career-high six points and freshman
Hannah Church (Ellicott City, Md./Mount de Sales) tallied a personal-best four goals as the fifth-ranked Gettysburg College women's lacrosse team routed Bryn Mawr College 19-8 in a Centennial Conference game played at Haverford College on Saturday, April 11.
Gettysburg (12-1, 7-0 CC) and fourth-ranked Franklin & Marshall College (12-1, 7-0 CC) each remained perfect in conference play with victories on Saturday and head into their match up on Wednesday, April 15, with the right to host the 2009 CC Tournament on the line. The Bullets and Diplomats have hosted each of the last six conference tournaments, with the host team winning five times (Gettysburg, 3-0; F&M, 2-1). Game time is slated for 4:30 p.m. at the North Campus Athletic Field in Lancaster, Pa.
After shutting out Bryn Mawr (3-10, 0-7 CC) 17-0 last spring, Gettysburg was an overwhelming favorite on Saturday and scored each of the first three goals of the game in just over two minutes, including two by Bitter. The Owls erased any thoughts of a bagel with three-straight goals in less than a minute, tying the contest 3-3 at 25:16.
Sophomore
Marnie Commins (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson) scored the go-ahead goal for Gettysburg off a pass from Bitter, kicking off a 7-0 run. After Bryn Mawr halted the spurt with a score at 11:15, the Bullets tossed in five of the final six goals of the half, including a pair by defender
Becky Lutz (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) to institute the 10-goal, running clock rule by the break.
Gettysburg added three more goals to start the second half to jump in front 18-5 with 19:31 to play.
The Bullets out-shot Bryn Mawr 39-16 in the contest and committed half as many turnovers (11-22). The Owls managed to hold an edge off the draw, winning 15 of 29 draw controls.
Bitter tied a career mark with four goals, adding two assists, four ground balls, and three caused turnovers. Church missed only once in five shot attempts and tacked on an assist, while Lutz finished with her first career hat trick. Freshman
Erin McCarthy (Linthicum, Md./Bryn Mawr) also notched career highs in goals (tie), assists, and points with two, two, and four, respectively.
Gettysburg racked up 15 caused turnovers in the contest with juniors
Lexie Hearn (Old Greenwich, Conn./Old Greenwich) and
Nina Emala (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) joining Bitter with three apiece. Hearn also won five draw controls, while Emala dished out a pair of assists.
