CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Gettysburg slimmed a 22-point deficit down to nine with two minutes left, but Washington College held on to hand the Bullets a 65-50 Centennial Conference defeat Saturday afternoon in women's basketball action.

The Shorewomen (8-4, 3-4 CC) outscored Gettysburg 27-7 to start the game and led 34-15 at halftime. But the Bullets (4-8, 2-5 CC) refused to go quietly, and a lay-up from senior Lauren Dadigan made it 57-48 with 2:06 remaining. But Washington went 8-for-12 from the foul line the rest of the way and finished 24-for-38 at the charity stripe for the game.

Junior guard Alyssa Oursler led Gettysburg with 15 points while sophomore forward Caroline Murphy, making her first collegiate start, added 12 points. Senior center Sara Kinsley contributed seven rebounds off the bench.

Washington had two different players finish with a double-double. Meghan Tait posted 15 points and 14 rebounds along with six assists while Latisha Pledger notched 11 points and 12 boards. Sally O'Connell tossed in 12 points and seven rebounds while Erin Fitzgerald registered 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Shorewomen led by as much as 22 on three occasions early in the second half, and it was still a 20-point game (50-30) when an 8-0 run – bookended by a pair of Cori Younghans gave the Bullets a spark. A Murphy lay-up at the 7:06 mark made it 54-42, and after Washington pushed its lead back to 15, a 6-0 Bullet run over a 2:23 span got the visitors within single figures. But the Shorewomen would hold the Bullets to a pair of free throws the rest of the way.

Gettysburg continues its season on Tuesday, when it visits Bryn Mawr College at 7 p.m. in another Centennial Conference match-up.
