QUICK HITS

LAST TIME OUT
Sophomore Freddy Caruso returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown and Gettysburg never looked back in a 70-0 win over Misericordia this past Saturday at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium. The Bullets, who rushed for a school- and Centennial Conference record 546 yards, spoiled the inaugural game for the Cougars, who are starting their football program this season. It was also Gettysburg's first shutout since 2004.
Ursinus trailed for nearly the entire game before scoring the go-ahead touchdown with just under three minutes to play and defeated host College of New Jersey 24-20 last Friday night.
LAST YEAR'S MATCHUP
Aden Twer caught a 32-yard touchdown pass from
Kody Smith as time expired, and Gettysburg held off a furious Ursinus rally to win 40-34 in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams in Gettysburg last season. Gettysburg led 34-10 midway through the third quarter before Ursinus rallied with 24 unanswered points, scoring three touchdowns and converting the two-point conversion on all three. On just five catches, Twer finished with 179 yards and tied a school record with three touchdowns receptions on distances of 81, 43, and 32 yards. Smith threw for 291 yards and four touchdowns on 13-of-22 passing while safety
Peter Hak '12 paced the defense with 15 tackles to go with a safety. Bryan Ellis rushed for 130 yards on 30 carries to lead Ursinus.
REWRITING THE RECORD BOOK
The Bullets set or tied a number of school or Centennial Conference records versus Misericordia, including:
546 Rushing Yards - A school and Centennial Conference record, besting the previous marks of 525 yards (school record) and 532 yards (CC record).
70 Points - The most in program history in the modern era and the most since an 81-0 win over American in 1928.
10 Touchdowns - A modern-era school record.
8 Extra Points Made by Robby Fay - Tied a school record.
AMONG THE NCAA LEADERS
Not surprisingly, the Bullets find themselves at or near the top of several different categories in the first edition of the NCAA Division III statistical report. Gettysburg leads the nation in rushing offense (546.0 ypg) and kickoff return average (89.0) and is tied for the lead in both scoring defense (0.0 ppg) and sacks allowed (0). In addition, the Bullets are second in scoring offense (70.0 ppg), fifth in total offense (665.0 ypg), seventh in tackles for loss (13.0), 12th in total defense (153.0 ypg), 16th in sacks (4.00), 32nd in pass efficiency (166.23), and 40th in pass defense (117.0 ypg). Individually, senior tailback
Ted Delia is tied for sixth in points per game (18.0) while sophomore wing Freddy Caruso is 25th in all-purpose yards per game (201.0).
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sophomore Freddy Caruso was named the Centennial Conference Special Teams Player of the Week in honor of his 89-yard kickoff return touchdown versus Misericordia. It was his first-ever kickoff return as a Bullet.
THE GETTYSBURG OFFENSE
Not many teams that run for over 500 yards do it without the benefit of a single 100-yard rusher, but that's exactly what the Bullets achieved in their win over Misericordia. Gettysburg, which led the Centennial Conference in rushing by nearly 45 yards per game last season, had 14 different players attempt a rush against the Cougars, and as a team, the Orange and Blue averaged 9.9 yards per attempt. Senior tailback
Ted Delia (94 yards, three touchdowns) and sophomore tailback
Eddie Hutchins (90 yards, one touchdown) have fronted the ground game while senior
Kody Smith has thrown for 111 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Junior receiver
Matt Pennella (three receptions, 29 yards, one touchdown) and sophomore wing Freddy Caruso (two receptions, 49 yards) are the team's leading receivers.
THE GETTYSBURG DEFENSE
The Bullets are also coming off a sparkling defensive performance. In terms of total offense, Misericordia's 136 yards were the fewest by a Gettysburg opponent since Averett had 135 in 2003. In addition, the Cougars 36 rushing yards were the fewest allowed by the Bullets since McDaniel had 33 in 2008, and Gettysburg's 13.0 tackles for loss were the most since the team's last shutout, a 14-0 win over Ursinus in 2004 that featured 14.0 tackles for loss. Junior linebacker
Cody DiAmore leads the team with nine tackles, including 2.0 for loss, and a forced fumble while senior linebacker
Larry DelViscio has made eight stops. Freshman linebacker
Kodie McNamara has contributed six hits and a sack.
THE GETTYSBURG SPECIAL TEAMS
As mentioned previously, freshman kicker
Robby Fay received a workout in the season opener, finishing 8-for-9 on extra points while tying the school record for PATs made. He also kicked off 11 times and booted three touchbacks. Caruso's kickoff return touchdown was the first by a Bullet since Charles Curcio '11 had a 92-yarder in a win over Moravian in 2008. Gettysburg did not return any of Misericordia's nine punts, and Caruso's only punt traveled 25 yards but was downed inside the 20.
SCOUTING URSINUS
The Bears rode a big passing performance from quarterback Chris Curran in their season-opening win, as the junior threw for 379 yards and three touchdowns on 26-of-47 passing. His big strike was a 45-yard touchdown pass to junior Ryan Lynady with 2:56 left. Sophomore receiver Darius Jones finished with seven catches for 138 yards and a pair of touchdowns while junior Jerry Rahill added seven catches for 98 yards. The Bears attempted only 24 rushes for 48 yards. Defensively, sophomore safety Matt Glowacki led the way with 15 tackles while freshman linebacker James Roccograndi made 10 stops.
THE COACHES
Gettysburg is coached by
Barry Streeter, who enters his 34th year at the helm of the Bullets. With 168 career victories, Streeter is tied for 10th among active Division III coaches in wins. He is also tied for 24th on the all-time Division III coaches win list. Streeter, who owns a career record of 168-162-5, is Gettysburg's all-time winningest and longest-tenured football coach in program history. In addition, his 99 Centennial Conference football wins are second in conference history.
Peter Gallagher is in his 12th season as the head coach at Ursinus. He has posted a 55-58 record and guided the Bears to a share of the Centennial Conference title in 2010 as well as an ECAC bowl game appearance in 2006.
