GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College women's basketball team never trailed as it picked up a 52-44 victory over visiting Washington College inside Bream Gym Saturday afternoon.
Gettysburg (5-2, 3-2 CC) received 43 points from the trio of seniors
Caroline Murphy (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and
Rianna Doane (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) and sophomore
Emily Duggan (Marmora, N.J./Ocean City). Duggan finished with a career-high 15 points to go with seven rebounds, while Murphy picked up her second double-double of the season with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Doane was everywhere for the Bullets, finishing with 13 points, five rebounds, five steals, and three assists.
Emily Hubley led Washington (2-5, 1-3 CC) with a dozen points, while Latisha Pledger finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.
It was a slow start for both teams until Gettysburg broke a 4-4 tie with a six-point run. A jumper by Duggan gave the hosts a 10-4 lead with 11:02 remaining in the opening period. Duggan shouldered the offensive load with 11 points in the opening half, capped by a jumper with 42 seconds left to give the Bullets a 26-17 advantage heading into the locker room.
The hosts roared out of the break with 10 unanswered points. Murphy jump-started the run by banking in a three-pointer and Doane hit back-to-back buckets to push the lead to 34-17 with 16:49 remaining in the game.
Washington answered the call by dialing long-distance. The Shorewomen canned three shots from beyond the arc as part of a 15-4 run to trim to deficit to four (40-36) just past the midpoint of the half. The Bullets fired right back with four different players getting into the scoring column to push the advantage back to double-figures at 48-36 with 4:04 remaining.
The visitors pulled to six (50-44) inside the final 20 seconds before Murphy iced the game with a pair of free throws.
Gettysburg held Washington to just 27.7 percent (18-of-65) shooting from the floor. The Bullets also out-rebounded the visitors 44-37.
Gettysburg returns to action against Benedictine (Ill.) University as part of the Daytona Beach Shootout on Friday, Dec. 20, at 10 a.m.
