Football to Host Ursinus in Conference, Home Opener

Bullets, Bears Enter Game at 1-0

CONFERENCE, HOME OPENER
The Bullets play their Centennial Conference and home opener as they take on the Ursinus College Bears. Gettysburg has captured its last two conference openers - both of which have come against Ursinus. Two years ago, the Bullets recorded a 40-34 victory over the Bears in Gettysburg, with Kody Smith '13 hitting senior Aden Twer with a game-winning 32-yard Hail Mary pass as time expired. Gettysburg has also won its last two home openers.

QUICK HITS
1. Gettysburg finished one game in front of Ursinus in the Centennial Conference standings last season. The Bullets tied for third at 6-3 while the Bears tied for fifth at 5-4. Gettysburg was voted to finish fifth in this year's Centennial Conference Preseason Poll while Ursinus was slotted third.
2. Ursinus enters the year having registered four consecutive winning seasons for the first time since 1915.
3. The Bullets are 19-8 over their last 27 games, dating back to Oct. 9, 2010.

SERIES HISTORY
Gettysburg and Ursinus will meet for the 57th time, with the Bullets holding a 33-19-4 lead. The Orange and Blue have won the last two meetings and eight of the last 11.

LAST TIME OUT
Gettysburg ended the game on a 20-0 run to break open a back-and-forth game, and the Bullets won their season opener in a shootout, winning 62-40 at Misericordia University on Saturday. Gettysburg led just 42-40 with 4:54 left in the third quarter after a Misericordia touchdown; however, junior Matt Perkins kicked back-to-back field goals to make it 48-40, sophomore Blake Rohde blocked a field goal, senior Aden Twer hauled in a 40-yard touchdown pass, and senior Tommy LeNoir ran for an 8-yard touchdown as the Bullets won going away. In an offensively-dominated game, the Bullets outgained Misericordia 722-640.

Ursinus used a 28-0 run spanning the first three quarters and held on for a 28-20 victory over the College of New Jersey in its season opener last Friday night in Collegeville. Senior quarterback Chris Curran threw for 192 yards and two touchdowns on 13-of-22 passing while senior tailback Jason Golderer rushed for 105 yards. Junior wideout Josh Williams added five receptions for 99 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore defensive back Kyle Adkins returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown to give the Bears their first touchdown of the season, and he went on to earn Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors. Sophomore defensive lineman Steve Ambs added eight tackles, two sacks, and four tackles for loss for the Bears.

LAST YEAR'S MATCHUP
Tailback Ted Delia '13 rushed for 121 yards and a career-high four touchdowns as Gettysburg captured its Centennial Conference opener with a 48-7 victory at Ursinus last season. The Bullets forced the Bears to punt on their first eight possessions while building a 36-0 lead by the third quarter. Quarterback Kody Smith '13 led all players with 129 yards rushing and a touchdown while passing for 205 yards and an additional TD for Gettysburg. Linebacker Larry DelViscio '13 finished with a game-high 12 tackles and a fumble recovery to lead a defense that held Ursinus to 177 yards, with just 17 coming on the ground. Defensive end Joe Ventresca '13 added 2.5 sacks totaling 21 yards. Chris Curran passed for 138 yards and a touchdown to lead Ursinus while Steve Ambs finished with 10 tackles for the Bears.

NATIONAL LEADERS
The Bullets' 722 total yards against Misericordia were by far the most in the opening week of Division III play. John Carroll University was second with 664 yards in a 41-0 victory over St. Norbert. The Bullets, who finished just 11 yards shy of the school record for total offense set on Oct. 30, 1999 at St. Lawrence University, also rank second in Division III in scoring after their 62-point output, and they are also fourth in the nation in rushing following a 398-yard game. In addition, sophomore linebacker Kodie McNamara's 19 tackles were the most in Division III last week.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Senior Tommy LeNoir was named the Centennial Conference Special Teams Player of the Week after a strong all-around performance at Misericordia. He accumulated 188 all-purpose yards, with 123 coming on his three kickoff returns, including a 67-yarder in the final seconds of the first half to help give the Bullets a field-goal attempt. He also returned two punts for 25 yards and made one reception for 32 yards. In addition, LeNoir's only rushing attempt was an 8-yard touchdown run.

THE GETTYSBURG OFFENSE
Gettysburg's Division III-leading offense is coming off a balanced performance against Misericordia. In addition to their 398-yard rushing total, the Bullets passed for 324 yards. However, Gettysburg has scored six of its eight touchdowns on the ground. Sophomore tailback Kyle Wigley led the Bullets with 176 rushing yards and one touchdown against the Cougars, junior quarterback Zach Miller added 92 yards, and junior tailback Nick Ulassin contributed 85 yards and three touchdowns. Miller, who was making his first collegiate start, added 324 yards through the air on 14-of-22 passing to finish with 416 total yards. The receiving game was paced by senior wideout Aden Twer, who grabbed three passes for 95 yards and a touchdown. Junior wing back Fred Caruso also made two receptions for 72 yards and a touchdown while rushing for an additional TD.

THE GETTYSBURG DEFENSE
McNamara is the Bullets' leading tackler after Week One while two other Bullets have reached double-digit totals. Senior linebacker Cody DiAmore posted 12 tackles and a had a pass breakup last week while sophomore cornerback Brian Calatozzo recorded 11 stops. Junior linebacker Griffin Ahsler added nine tackles in his first collegiate start while sophomore safety Michael Kornegay, junior safety Gordon Prince, and junior defensive end A.J. Hill made eight tackles apiece.

THE GETTYSBURG SPECIAL TEAMS
The Bullets received solid special teams play last week. In addition to LeNoir's performance in the return game, senior Aden Twer returned two kickoffs for 65 yards. Junior kicker Matt Perkins had a busy day and finished 6-for-7 on extra points and 2-for-3 on field goals, converting a 20- and 30-yarder. In addition, the Bullets added three blocked kicks; along with Rohde's blocked field goal, senior Evan Mickel swatted a pair of extra-point attempts.

SCOUTING URSINUS
The Bears are also coming off a balanced offensive performance in their season opener, as they rushed for 154 yards and passed for 192 yards in their win over the College of New Jersey. Defensively, Ursinus held TCNJ to 212 yards, including just 71 on the ground. Senior quarterback Chris Curran, who passed for 192 yards and a pair of touchdowns, comes into Saturday's game needing 65 yards of total offense and 433 passing yards to become the Ursinus career leader in both categories. He led the Centennial Conference in passing yards per game (263.2) and touchdown passes (25) last season while throwing just four interceptions. A second team All-Centennial Conference pick, he returns two other all-conference selections in junior receiver Jerry Rahill, who made 53 catches for 765 yards and seven touchdowns last season, and senior center Joe Polansky, an All-CC honorable mention center. Defensively, the Bears bring back an All-Centennial Conference honorable mention choice in senior defensive end Andrew Fiorentino, who posted eight sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss last season. Sophomore Eric Boyer returns to lead the special teams after leading the conference with 10 field goals in 2012.
