GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior receiver Aden Twer (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) broke the oldest major football record at Gettysburg, but the Bullets dropped a 41-23 decision to Ursinus College in its home and Centennial Conference opener Saturday afternoon at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.

The Bears (2-0, 1-0 CC) never trailed and scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to break the game open after Gettysburg (1-1, 0-1 CC) had pulled to within a field goal with 4:02 remaining in the third quarter.

Twer erased Gettysburg's 49-year-old school record for career touchdown receptions when he caught a 4-yard TD strike with 4:06 remaining to set the final score. It was the 19th touchdown catch of his career, one more than Ken Snyder '65 accumulated in three years from 1962-64. Freshmen were ineligible for varsity competition during Snyder's career.

"It's an honor to have the record and be associated with someone like Ken Snyder who is in the Hall of Honor," said Twer. "It's bittersweet considering the outcome of the game and something that I'm not going to dwell on – we need to prepare for next week and come out with more intensity the rest of the season."

Twer finished with three catches for 86 yards, and he also had a 62-yard touchdown reception.

Jason Golderer rushed for 185 yards and three touchdowns to lead Ursinus, which turned three Gettysburg turnovers into 17 points.

Sophomore Kyle Wigley (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) posted his second consecutive 100-yard rushing game for the Bullets, finishing with 128 yards and one touchdown on 21 carries. Junior Zach Miller (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) threw for 231 yards and two touchdowns on 15-of-26 passing while junior wing Fred Caruso (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name) caught five passes for 72 yards.

Sophomore cornerback Brian Calatozzo (Sewell, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) made a pair of interceptions for the Bullets while sophomore linebacker Kodie McNamara (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) and freshman linebacker Michael Pennella (Martinsville, N.J./Bridgewater Raritan) made 11 and 10 tackles, respectively.

Steve Ambs paced the Ursinus defense with nine tackles, including 3.5 for loss and 2.0 sacks.

The Bears chewed up 7:52 on the game's opening drive, which ended in a 26-yard field goal by Eric Boyer. Gettysburg answered on its opening possession when junior Matt Perkins (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central) booted a 29-yard field goal to cap a 65-yard, 4:19 drive.

Ursinus punted on its next possession before turning back-to-back Gettysburg turnovers into 10 points. Both turnovers came in Bullet territory, starting with a Greg DiSanto interception that put the ball at the Gettysburg-27 early in the second quarter. Six plays later, Golderer ran it in from six yards out as the visitors took a 10-3 lead with 12:08 on the clock.

On the second play of the Bullets' ensuing drive, a Miller fumble was picked up by Andrew Fiorentino at the Gettysburg-19. Boyer would kick his second field goal, this time from 27 yards away, to make it 13-3 with 9:20 showing.

Gettysburg appeared to be in trouble again when a bad snap on a punt gave the Bears the ball at the Bullet-25. But Calatozzo prevented further damage when he intercepted a pass at the Gettysburg-5 and returned it 10 yards. But the Bullets were eventually forced to punt before turning the ball over on downs on their final drive of the half.

The Bullets received the second-half kickoff and drove 77 yards on just six plays, with Wigley breaking through the middle for a 38-yard touchdown run to make it 13-10 with 13:22 on the clock.

Ursinus answered, however, with a nine-play, 70-yard drive, with Golderer capping the mark with a 1-yard TD plunge with 9:06 to go in the quarter. But later in the period, Calatozzo's second pick – a leaping grab on deep pass downfield – gave his team possession at its own 25. Five plays later, Miller connected with Twer on a perfectly thrown ball down the left sideline. Twer caught it in stride at the Ursinus-25 and outraced his defender to make it 20-17 with 4:02 remaining in the period.

The Bears pinned the Bullets at their own 5-yard line early in the fourth quarter, and after a three-and-out Ursinus took over on a punt on the Gettysburg-38. Corey Kelly would make it 27-17 with a 13-yard touchdown run with 12:03 left in the game.

Another three-and-out gave Ursinus the ball in Gettysburg territory following a punt once again, as the Bears started at the Bullet-48. Josh Williams would then make a diving 37-yard reception that led to a 3-yard touchdown run from Golderer to push Ursinus' advantage to 34-17.

Ursinus started with a short field for the third series in a row when Gettysburg fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and the Bears fell on the loose ball at the Gettysburg-21. Chris Curran would then connect with Jerry Rahill on an 8-yard touchdown pass as the Bears' lead ballooned to 41-17 with 5:45 left.

The Bullets answered with a quick nine-play, 80-yard drive, capped by Twer's record-setting catch on a slant over the middle. But Miller's two-point conversion pass was incomplete and Gettysburg's ensuing on-side kick attempt was unsuccessful.

Gettysburg returns to Centennial Conference action next Saturday when it visits Juniata College at 1 p.m.
