Box Score

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Fifth-ranked Gettysburg College scored the final three goals in regulation to force overtime and senior Loren Pruitt (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) scored with four seconds left to force a second extra period, but luck ran out for the Bullets as Washington College completed its upset bid with a goal in sudden victory for a 12-11 victory in Centennial Conference women's lacrosse action Saturday evening.

Washington (9-4, 5-2 CC) ended Gettysburg's (12-2, 6-1 CC) 28-game winning streak against Centennial foes and became the first conference school other than Franklin & Marshall College to beat the Bullets since 2002 (Ursinus College).

Senior Kelsey Markiewicz (Taconic, Conn./Berkshire School (Mass.)) tossed in three goals, while Pruitt, junior Bridget Kenny (Gladstone, N.J./Bernards), and sophomore Maggie Connolly (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) each turned in a pair of goals. Kenny also added eight draw controls, giving her 31 in her last four outings.

Carly Eisenbrandt led Washington with five goals and one assist, while Alli Dudley and Katherine Vincent each tallied two goals, the former netting the game-winner with 3:18 left in the second overtime period. Allison Remenapp posted 14 saves for the Shorewomen.

Gettysburg was in for a battle from the beginning as Washington won the opening draw control and turned it into a goal 26 seconds into the contest. The Bullets received scores from Kenny and junior Mandy Buell (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) to take a 2-1 advantage at 26:13.

The teams traded goals for the remainder of the opening half with a score by Eisenbrandt setting the scoreboard at 4-4 entering the break.

Back-to-back tallies by Kenny and Pruitt lifted the visitors to a 6-4 advantage with 21:50 to go in the game. Washington responded quickly as Vincent scored 21 seconds later to jump-start a 5-0 run, tied for the biggest run against Gettysburg this season. Another goal by Eisenbrandt lifted the hosts to a 9-6 lead with 11:09 left.

After exchanging goals, the Bullets shouldered the pressure and rallied with three goals inside the final seven minutes of play. Markiewicz scored the first two with Connolly providing the equalizer to make it 10-10 with 3:48 left in regulation.

Vincent had the final shot in regulation, but she was stopped on a free-position attempt by goalie Catherine Towers (Midlothian, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) with 3:26 remaining.

Eisenbrandt struck again in the extra session, putting Washington up by a goal 49 seconds in. Gettysburg tried to answer, but Remenapp thwarted Kenny on the ensuing possession. Towers came right back for the Bullets, notching a pair of saves to keep her team within a goal.

With time winding down in the first overtime, Gettysburg went on the attack. Connolly was turned away by Remenapp, but the Bullet sophomore recovered the ground ball and managed to find Pruitt for the game-tying goal with just four seconds left to force sudden victory.

Gettysburg captured the opening draw control in the second overtime and tried to put the game to rest immediately. Connolly's free position shot hit the post and an additional shot by Markiewicz was contained by Remenapp.

Washington was unable to score on the other end and Gettysburg regained possession. However, the Bullets failed to clear the ball up the field and the Shorewomen made the most of the mistake as Emily Hubley found Dudley for the winner with 3:18 in the period.

Gettysburg finished with the advantage in shots (39-26), ground balls (15-9), and draw controls (18-9). The win was Washington's first over the Bullets since 1999, ending a 17-game losing streak to the Bullets.

Gettysburg hosts No. 8 Franklin & Marshall College on Wednesday, April 23, at 7 p.m. The Bullets and Diplomats have combined to win each of the last 12 Centennial championships.
