GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College wrestling team made the most of its first appearance inside Bream Gym by dispatching three non-conference foes Saturday afternoon.
With the three victories, Gettysburg (7-1) equaled its best win total in duals over the last decade. The Bullets came-from-behind to defeat Penn College (2-8-1) 30-15 before leading from start-to-finish in a 26-18 decision over King's College (3-12-1). Gettysburg concluded the day with a 43-6 win over Southern Virginia University (0-11).
A handful of Bullets recorded multiple wins on the day. Freshman
Lenny Ogozalek (Summit, Hill, Pa./Panther Valley) used up just 2:52 of mat time in posting a pair of pins at 125 pounds. Junior
Tyler Cunningham (East Berlin, Conn./Xavier) and sophomore
Camden Stoops (East Prospect, Pa./Eastern York) each recorded three victories at 174 and 184, respectively. Freshman
Quinn Merrigan (Canton, Mass./Canton) and
Anthony Puca (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) each notched a pair of wins at 149 and 197, respectively.
Gettysburg jumped out early against Penn College as Ogozalek put Aaron Doll on his back in just 54 seconds. Senior
Matt Laux (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) added a 10-4 decision at 133 to give the Bullets a 9-0 lead.
The Wildcats stormed back to take a 15-9 lead by winning the next four matches, including one-point decisions at 141 and 157. Cunningham put a stop to the run by scoring a late takedown to edge Daniel Frankenfield 5-4 at 174.
The Bullets ended the day with three consecutive pins by Stoops at 184(6:24), Puca at 197 (4:43), and freshman
Mike Burek (Berlin, Conn./Berlin) at heavyweight (4:25).
Gettysburg took six of the first eight bouts against King's. Ogozalek once again took down his foe for an early pin at 1:58. After a close decision loss at 133, the Bullets ran off three-straight wins, including a major decision by
Jake Bracken (Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School) at 141 (8-0) and a pin by sophomore
Brandon Carcuffe (Oxford, N.J./West Morris Central) at 165(1:34). Cunningham added an 8-4 decision at 174 and Stoops capped the Orange and Blue's scoring with a major decision (11-3) at 184 pounds.
Gettysburg won four of the five bouts contested against Southern Virginia. Merrigan posted his team-best seventh pin of the campaign at 149 (1:18) and freshman
Brian Gianforte (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan) picked up an 11-2 major decision at 165. Stoops shut out Michael Kilstrom for a 4-0 win at 184 and Puca cruised to a second-round pin-fall at 197.
