Box Score HAVERFORD, Pa. – Christina Gould scored on a free-position attempt 45 seconds into the second overtime period to lift Haverford College past No. 4 Gettysburg College in Centennial Conference women's lacrosse action at Swan Field on Saturday.
Senior
Mandy Buell (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) led Gettysburg with four goals, while junior
Amanda Borucki (Westminster, Md./North Carroll) posted two goals and one assist. Senior
Kate Higgins (Oreland, Pa./William Penn Charter School) posted three caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Diana Perry scored the final four goals of regulation and finished with a game-high seven to pace Haverford.
After Perry tossed in the game's first goal, Gettysburg ran off the next eight leading into the early minutes of the second half. Junior
Maggie Connolly (Winchester, Mass./Winchester), Buell, and Borucki all scored in a span of 51 seconds to push the lead to 4-1. Buell scored another goal at 1:38 and after winning the ensuing draw control, senior
Bridget Kenny (Gladstone, N.J./Bernards) raced to the cage for a goal just nine seconds later to make it 6-1 at the break.
Gettysburg netted the first two goals of the second half, but turnovers plagued the Bullets as Haverford sliced the deficit. Molly Lausten capped a five-goal run that made it 8-6 with 18:17 on the clock.
Borucki and Buell scored a pair of goals to push the lead back to four (10-6) with just over 15 minutes remaining. The Bullets managed one more shot on goal during the remaining time with Haverford goalie Megan Chenworth making the save at 12:28.
Perry carried Haverford down the stretch with the next three goals to pull the hosts within one with 2:54 left. Gettysburg gained possession twice in the final time, but each time the Ford defense forced a turnover. Lausten drew a free-position attempt with 36 seconds left and was denied by sophomore goalie
Shannon Keeler (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown). Haverford recovered the loose ball and Perry tied the game on a free-position attempt with 18 seconds left.
In the extra session, Keeler once again put the lock on Lausten on a shot 2:21 into the period. Gettysburg gained possession of the final draw and ran the clock down until Buell was awarded a free-position attempt at 18 seconds. Her shot was blocked before getting to the goal and the Fords came away with the ball as time ran out.
The hosts won the game's final draw and marched down to the offensive end. Gould drew the free position on the left side of the fan and on the referee's whistle, took a step toward the cage and bounced a shot past Keeler for the game-winner.
Gettysburg held advantages in shots (30-23) and draw controls (16-9), while Haverford led in ground balls 16-15.
Keeler finished with seven saves and three ground balls for the Bullets. Connolly posted one goal and one assist to go with seven draw controls. Junior
Emily Tropsa (Darien, Conn./Darien) added three ground balls, one caused turnover, and one draw control.
Gettysburg travels to No. 16 York (Pa.) College on Tuesday, March 24. Game time is 4 p.m.
