Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sixth-ranked Gettysburg College busted loose for a seven-goal run to break a four-all tie and gallop past Haverford College 16-7 in the Centennial Conference opener Saturday at Clark Field.
Gettysburg (7-1, 1-0 CC) burst out of the gate with two goals in the first 41 seconds, both coming out of the stick of sophomore
Katie Landry (Hingham, Mass./Hingham). Haverford (4-4, 0-1 CC), which took down the Bullets 11-10 in overtime to start the regular season last spring, weathered the hot start and came back to tie the game 4-4 on a goal by Elysa Alder at 17:32 in the first half.
The Fords had no answer for Gettysburg's ensuing offensive onslaught over the next 20 minutes. Landry found senior
Maggie Connolly (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) in front of the cage for the go-ahead goal at 14:35 and the Bullets were off and running. Another pass by Landry led to a goal by sophomore
Katie Willis (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) to cap a 7-0 run and make it 11-4 with 28:55 left in the game.
Haverford closed the gap to 12-7 on a tally by Rina Rosnow with 18:33 to go. Gettysburg's dominance inside the draw circle proved too much for the Fords to overcome, however, as the hosts won all 10 draws in the final stanza.
Junior
Caroline Jaeger (Hampton, N.J./North Hunterdon) scored back-to-back goals just 18 seconds apart and senior
Amanda Borucki (Westminster, Md./North Carroll) tossed in her fourth and final tally to close the scoring with 6:18 to go.
Gettysburg tied a season high with 19 draw controls. The Bullets also connected on a season-high 64 percent (16-of-25) of their shot attempts.
Borucki connected on 4-of-6 shots and scooped up three draw controls. Landry finished with three goals and two assists, while senior
Emily Tropsa (Darien, Conn./Darien) tossed in three scores. Connolly and Jaeger each finished with a pair of goals and combined for nine draw controls. Sophomore
Cassie Smith (Phoenix, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) posted three draw controls, one ground ball, and one caused turnover.
Freshman
Bailey Pilder (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) and junior
Shannon Keeler (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) split time in the Gettysburg goal. Pilder picked up the victory after making two saves in the first half, while Keeler recorded two stops in the final period.
Gettysburg travels to Muhlenberg College on Friday, April 1, at 7 p.m.
