GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Fourth-ranked Franklin & Marshall College controlled the tempo and the draw circle early and wrapped up the top seed in the Centennial Conference playoffs with a 16-11 victory over fifth-ranked Gettysburg College at Clark Field Wednesday night.
Franklin & Marshall (16-1, 8-0 CC) wasted no time in picking up its first regular-season win over Gettysburg (13-2, 7-1 CC) since 2011. After controlling the opening draw, the Diplomats scored 58 seconds into the game with Gabby Frank finding Claire Jackson.
The visitors won each of the first seven draw controls as the lead reached 5-2 on a free-position shot from the base-line by Grace Saliba at 17:35. Five more Diplomat goals hit the back of the net before a free-position score by sophomore
Katie Willis (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) set the score at 10-3 heading into the break.
Franklin & Marshall's lead hit 10 (13-3) as Paige Moriarty followed up a pair of saves by goalie Danielle Harrington with a goal at 24:28. Senior
Abby Baigelman (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) breathed new life into Gettysburg with back-to-back goals capping a three-goal spurt that sliced the lead to 13-6 with 14:43 to play.
The Diplomats regained an eight-goal lead at 15-7 after forcing a failed clear by the hosts and converting it into a transition goal by Saliba at 6:25. Senior
Amanda Borucki (Westminster, Md./North Carroll) and Baigelman tallied back-to-back free-position goals and Borucki added another tally to pull the score to 15-10 with 1:32 to go.
Franklin & Marshall put a stamp on the win with Frank flipping a loose ball into the back of the net with 41 seconds left. Sophomore
Maggie Welsh (Rye, N.Y./Holy Child) tallied the game's final goal with 18 seconds on the clock.
The Diplomats held a 27-22 lead in shots and an 18-11 advantage in draw controls.
Baigelman finished with three goals and two assists, while Welsh posted a personal best three goals. Borucki finished with a pair of goals. Sophomore
Katie Landry (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) recorded one goal, two ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Freshman
Bailey Pilder (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) made three saves in the final 27:13.
Moriarty and Saliba each produced four goals and Jackson finished with two goals and three assists. Anastasia Mergner logged two goals, one assist, two ground balls, and seven draw controls. Harrington finished with eight saves.
Gettysburg closes the regular season at home against Bryn Mawr on Saturday at 1 p.m.
