Boggs Named Campbell Trophy Semifinalist

Senior offensive lineman in running for coveted Scholar-Athlete award

Cordell Boggs '17 was named a semifinalist for the coveted Campbell Trophy.
IRVING, Texas  – The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame announced the semifinalists for the 2016 William V. Campbell Trophy and Gettysburg College senior right tackle Cordell Boggs (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) was among the outstanding list of players represented.

Boggs is one of 156 semifinalists from all divisions of college football. He was one of just 33 representatives from NCAA Division III and joins Jonathan Naji from Franklin & Marshall College, Jack Campbell from Johns Hopkins University, and Jalen Snyder-Scipio from Moravian College as the only players from the Centennial Conference.

The William V. Campbell Trophy, presented by Fidelity Investments, recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation. Candidates for the award must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first-team player or significant contributor, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.

Boggs is a four-year starter on the offensive line for the Bullets. He has started each of the last 28 games for Gettysburg and was elected a team captain this fall. With Boggs paving the way, the Bullets have annually ranked among the top offenses in the Centennial Conference. The team led the conference in passing offense in 2013 and sat atop the league in rushing yardage in 2015. This season, Gettysburg is averaging 478 yards of total offense and 212.8 rushing yards per game.

Off the field, Boggs is a biochemistry-molecular biology major. He is a two-time member of the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team and he has been named to the College's Dean's List in each of his six semesters.

The NFF will announce 12-14 finalists on Nov. 1, and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the NFF Scholar-Athlete Class, presented by Fidelity Investments. The finalists will travel to New York City for the 59th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 6, where their accomplishments will be highlighted in front of one of the most powerful audiences in all of sports. At the event, one member of the class will be declared the winner of the 27th William V. Campbell Trophy and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000.
