THE COACHES
Barry Streeter enters his 38th season at the helm of Gettysburg's football program. Streeter is the longest-tenured active coach in Division III and his 190 wins place him sixth among active coaches. Streeter has led Gettysburg to three Centennial Conference championships (1983-85) and he has twice been named CC Coach of the Year. In 1985, he led the Bullets to the only undefeated regular season in school history (9-0-1) and an appearance in the national semifinals. Streeter is a 1971 graduate of Lebanon Valley and he is a member of the Dutchmen's Hall of Fame.
Peter Gallagher is in his 16th season as head coach at Ursinus. Gallagher is the Bears' all-time leader in wins with a record of 77-76. He helped Ursinus to the Centennial Conference title in 2010 and a school-record six consecutive winning seasons from 2009-14. Gallagher is a 1993 graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College where he was named All-West Virginia Athletic Conference in football.
THE SERIES
Gettysburg leads Ursinus 34-21-4 in a series that began in 1903. The two teams have met every year since the formation of the Centennial Conference in 1983. Since then, the series has been nearly dead-even with the Bullets holding a slight 17-16 advantage. Gettysburg and Ursinus have kicked off the conference schedule in each of the last five years, with the former winning three of those meetings.
CENTENNIAL OPENERS
Gettysburg is 17-16 in conference openers since 1983. The Bullets have split their 16 road openers, including both road contests at Ursinus.
LAST MEETING
Gettysburg erased an 8-0 deficit to defeat Ursinus 22-15 at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium last fall. The Bears opened with a pair of field goals and a safety before the Bullets found the end zone late in the first half on a pass from
Sam McDermott '16 to
Travis Andrews '16. The momentum stayed with the home team with a pair of scoring drives ending with passes from McDermott to
Ryan Thompson '18 (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) making it 22-8 heading into the final period. After pulling within a touchdown, Ursinus drove into Gettysburg territory in the final two minutes, but
Brian Calatozzo '16 intercepted a pass to seal the victory with 90 seconds remaining. McDermott finished with 269 yards and three touchdowns, while
Kyle Wigley '16 carried the ball 21 times for 72 yards. Thompson reeled in five catches for 79 yards.
Kodie McNamara '16 led the defensive effort with a career-high 20 tackles.
LAST TIME OUT
Gettysburg found its offense too late in a 38-22 loss to Bridgewater last Saturday. The Eagles scored the first 31 points before the Bullets found the scoreboard midway through the fourth quarter. Despite reaching opponent territory five times, Gettysburg was forced to punt 10 times on its first 11 drives. Quarterbacks
Justin Davidov '18 (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) and
Danny Thompson '17 (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) combined for 380 yards of offense. Davidov was 12-of-17 for 150 yards and a touchdown through the air, while also rushing for 97 yards and a score. Thompson picked up 58 yards on the ground and also scored a touchdown. Linebacker
Frank Olmo '18 (Eatontown, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) led the team with 15 tackles, while cornerback
Kamau Bridges '18 (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) totaled nine tackles, one tackle for a loss, and one forced fumble.
SCOUTING URSINUS
Ursinus turned the ball over seven times in a 23-13 loss to Bethany (W.V.) College to open the 2016 campaign. The Bears out-gained the Bison 407-313, but five interceptions and two fumbles proved detrimental. Freshman quarterback
Thomas Garlick threw for 302 yards in his collegiate debut, including 85 on a touchdown pass to junior
Carmen Fortino that cut Bethany's lead to 16-13 with 13:25 remaining. Fortino posted 161 yards receiving on seven catches. Freshman
Stacey Gardner also turned in a strong collegiate debut, piling up 105 yards on 17 carries and adding three catches for 22 yards. Sophomore
Charles Anderson and junior
Heath Hidley each posted 12 tackles with three of the former's resulting in a loss.
GETTYSBURG OFFENSE
Gettysburg posted 416 yards of total offense in the opener against Bridgewater. The Bullets piled up 183 yards on its final three drives, including 133 passing yards. Junior
Justin Davidov accounted for 247 yards of offense and a pair of touchdowns. He turned in a 35-yard rush and posted a 35-yard passing touchdown, marking his first career score through the air. Ten different Bullets hauled in a catch led by senior
Jordan Kelso's (Cookstown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) four receptions for 26 yards.
GETTYSBURG DEFENSE
The Bullets forced a trio of turnovers against Bridgewater. Sophomore
Mike McKnight (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) knocked the ball out for a fumble on the game's opening drive and classmate
Paul Triandafilou recovered a loose ball later in the game. Senior
John Gutowski (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) picked off a pass near the goal line and also managed an acrobatic pass break-up. Junior
Kamau Bridges forced a fumble that was recovered by the Eagles. Junior
Frank Olmo racked up five solo tackles and 10 assists stops, while seven of Bridges' nine stops were of the solo variety.
GETTYSBURG SPECIAL TEAMS
The Bullets got a workout in the kicking game with 10 punts and three kick-offs. Sophomore
Tyler Frazee (Hopewell, N.J./South Hunterdon) punted nine times for an average of 27.3 yards per punt. He placed four punts inside Bridgewater's 20-yard line. Freshman
Ryan Loftus (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) averaged 46.3 yards on three kick-offs, while fellow first-year
Justin Geisel (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day School) started an onside kick that was recovered by the Bullets. The return game did not get going thanks to a strong kicking effort by the Eagles.
MOBILE QUARTERBACKS
Junior
Justin Davidov and senior
Danny Thompson led the Bullets in rushing with 97 and 58 yards, respectively. The last time two Gettysburg quarterbacks each managed 50-plus yards rushing was 2011 when
Kyle Whitmoyer '12 and
Kody Smith '13 posted 86 and 65 yards, respectively, against Franklin & Marshall.
HEAD OF THE CLASS
Cordell Boggs '17 was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team for the second year in a row last fall. Boggs has started each of the last 24 games on the offensive line for the Bullets, paving the way for 15 efforts of 200 years or more by the team. Away from the field, he is a biochemistry-molecular biology major and has been named to the Dean's List in each of his six semesters.
TOP STOPPER
Chris Miller '17 posted a career-high 97 tackles last season, including a team-best 65 solo stops. He led the team with 10 tackles for a loss, including three sacks for a loss of 27 yards. Heading into his final campaign, Miller sits 20th in program history with 227 career tackles. He also sits in a tie for 12th in career tackles for a loss with 24.
DEEP THREAT
Jordan Kelso '17 hauled in 33 catches for 519 yards and six touchdowns last season. Kelso finished third in the Centennial Conference at 15.7 yards per catch. His breakout game came against Juniata when he caught seven passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns. He currently has 816 yards on 51 receptions in his career.
RETURN OF THE MAC
Matt McFadden '19 quickly established himself as one of the top returners in the country last season. McFadden finished ninth in the country in combined kick return yards with 806 as a first-year. He led the conference in both punt return yards (269) and kick return yards (537). A second-team all-conference pick, McFadden posted 243 all-purpose yards against Susquehanna, including 77 on a punt return touchdown.
