Dorshimer, Gibbons Lead Bullets Past Washington

Gettysburg duo combine for 53 points in 76-68 win

Emma Dorshimer '19 became the first Bullet to net 30 points in a game in nearly seven years.
Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. Sophomore Emma Dorshimer (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) scored a career-high 30 points and junior Emily Gibbons (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) put up 23 points and 17 rebounds as Gettysburg College held off Washington College for a 76-68 victory in a Centennial Conference women's hoops contest inside Bream Gym Saturday.

Gettysburg (12-4, 8-3 CC), which avenged an early season loss to Washington (7-9, 4-7 CC) in Chestertown, won for the ninth time in its last 10 games and improved to 7-0 at home this season.

Dorshimer topped her personal high by three points and became the first Bullet to net 30 in a game since Caitlin Moser '11 dropped 34 on Farmingdale State College in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Division III Tournament. Dorshimer finished 10-of-20 from the floor and hit all seven of her free throw attempts.

Gibbons logged her conference-best 12th double-double of the season. She now sits just three shy of the school's single-season double-doubles record established by Donna Bourke '92 in 1991-92. The junior forward finished 9-of-15 from the floor and 5-of-6 at the charity stripe.

Ali Grundy led Washington with 23 points with most of the damage coming on six three-pointers.

After grinding through the opening quarter which saw the Bullets take an 11-8 lead by its end, the two teams picked up the pace in the second period. Gettysburg jumped ahead by eight (26-18) following a jumper and three-pointer by Dorshimer midway through the frame. Washington stormed back with a 12-2 run to seize the advantage, but a lay-up by Gibbons sent the teams into the locker rooms tied at 30.

Momentum swung to the Orange and Blue in the third quarter. With the score tied 41-41, the Bullets mounted a 12-3 run to end the period. A lay-up by Gibbons and a three-pointer by freshman Lindsay Hiner (New Britain, Pa./Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) pushed Gettysburg in front 53-44 heading into the last period.

Grundy caught fire in the final quarter, knocking down a trio of long-range shots to pull her team within one (67-66) with three-minutes to play. Freshman Ashley Gehrin (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) came right back with a baseline lay-up to push the lead back to three (69-66).

On Washington's next possession, freshman Emma Hahner (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton Wright) poked the ball away from her foe and Gehrin drew a foul on the way to the basket. The Gettysburg first-year sank both attempts to give her team a 71-66 lead.

A lay-up by junior Kendra Meredith (Boyds, Md./Northwest) and a free throw by Gibbons made it a 74-66 advantage with 47 seconds left. After a jumper by Emily Thiemann, Gibbons iced the game with a pair of free throws.

After committing 12 turnovers in the first half, Gettysburg turned the ball only twice in the final 20 minutes. The Bullets shot 26-of-61 (42.6 percent) from the floor and 19-of-25 (76 percent) at the free throw line. Gettysburg also out-rebounded Washington 48-28 and held a 36-16 edge in points in the paint.

Hahner grabbed 10 rebounds, while fellow first-year Kiera Cesareo (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) finished with six points and five rebounds. Meredith chipped in with eight points and five assists.

Gettysburg hosts Franklin & Marshall College next Thursday, Jan. 26, at 6 p.m.
