Football Falls at No. 21 Johns Hopkins

Blue Jays take down Bullets 52-0

BALTIMORE – Gettysburg College had no answer for a resurgent Johns Hopkins University squad as the 21st-ranked Blue Jays blanked the Bullets 52-0 Friday night at Homewood Field.

Gettysburg (2-5, 2-4 CC) saw its two-game winning streak snapped. The Bullets were out-gained 607-139 and were held to just seven first downs. Since losing its first Centennial Conference game in five years to Ursinus College three weeks ago, Johns Hopkins (6-1, 5-1 CC) has beaten its last two opponents  97-7.

After missing a field goal on its first possession, Johns Hopkins scored touchdowns on its next two. Gettysburg denied the Blue Jays a third score at the start of the second quarter as senior Andrew Major (St. Davids, Pa./Radnor) swatted away a 30-yard field goal attempt by Jamie Sullivan. It was Major's second blocked kick of the season and the fourth of his career, which ties the program's all-time mark.

Johns Hopkins held Gettysburg to one pass completion in the first half, while tacking on two more touchdowns to make it 28-0 at the break.

The Blue Jays opened the second half with a program-record tying 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Patrick Kelly.

Senior Frank Olmo (Eatontown, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) recovered a fumble at midfield to regain possession for the Bullets five minutes into the third quarter. Gettysburg was unable to take advantage of the turnover, however, going three-and-out on the next possession.

Johns Hopkins ate up nearly 10 minutes of game clock with a 16-play drive for the game's final points on a field goal by Sullivan with 1:26 left.

Freshman tailback Reggie JeanCharles (Galloway, N.J./Holy Spirit) picked up 34 yards on 10 carries, while senior quarterback Justin Davidov (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) gained 32 yards on nine totes. Sophomore Evan Tannenbaum (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) averaged 39.2 yards on nine punts.

Junior Jake Skinner (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) racked up a game-high 16 tackles. Olmo and junior Logan Aikey (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) each posted eight tackles, while junior Mike McKnight (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) logged seven tackles and two pass break-ups. McKnight is now just one break-up shy of tying the program's single-season standard of 16 set by Andy Baribeau '96 in 1995.

Johns Hopkins quarterback David Tammaro threw for 223 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Luke McFadden hauled in six passes for 102 yards and a score, while Tyler Messinger rushed across the goal line twice. Mike Kalanik paced the Blue Jay defense with six tackles, one sack, and 3.5 tackles for a loss.

Gettysburg hosts Susquehanna University next Saturday, Oct. 28, at 1 p.m.
