ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Elizabethtown College used a 21-0 advantage in points off turnovers to hand Gettysburg College its first loss of the season 77-54 in a non-conference women's basketball contest Monday night.
Sophomore
Ashley Gehrin (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) reached double-figures for the second-straight outing with 13 points for Gettysburg (5-1). Junior
Emma Dorshimer (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) added a dozen points, while senior
Emily Gibbons (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) picked up her third double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Elizabethtown (5-2) received a game-high 18 points from Veronica Christ coming off the bench. Mikayla Ruth scored 15 points and Lydia Lawson tallied 14.
A three-pointer by sophomore
Emma Hahner (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton Wright) gave Gettysburg its only lead of the game at 3-2 just 1:43 into the game. The Blue Jays rattled off the next eight points and held an 18-7 advantage at the end of the period.
Elizabethtown maintained its double-figure advantage following a trio of free throws by Abby Beyer which made it 24-14 with 7:28 to go in the second quarter. The Bullets pulled within five (26-21) following a three-pointer by Gehrin and lay-up by Gibbons, but the Blue Jays upped the margin to nine (33-24) heading into the break.
Gettysburg held the hosts without a point for nearly five minutes at the start of the third quarter, while trimming the deficit down to four (33-29). The Blue Jays eventually got their offense back on track, but Gettysburg remained within striking distance. An old-fashioned three-point play by Dorshimer set the score at 42-37 with 2:16 to go in the third quarter.
Elizabethtown blew the game open 20-5 run over the next six minutes. A lay-up by Christ gave the Blue Jays a 20-point lead (62-42) with 5:58 to play.
Gettysburg finished 18-of-46 (39.1 percent) from the field, while Elizabethtown canned 28-of-65 (43.1 percent) attempts. The Blue Jays hit eight three-pointers and committed just eight turnovers compared to Gettysburg's 22.
Gettysburg hosts Dickinson College Wednesday at 6 p.m.
