Emma Christie (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich) and sophomore
Steph Colson (Westminster, Md./Manchester Valley) each scored three goals as fourth-ranked Gettysburg College denied seventh-ranked Washington and Lee University its third-straight win over a top-10 opponent with an 11-4 decision at Clark Field on Saturday.
Washington and Lee (4-1) had beaten No. 4 Franklin & Marshall College and No. 7 Salisbury University in its last two outings, but the Generals couldn't keep pace with the unbeaten Bullets as the hosts turned in the first three goals and five of the first six overall. Gettysburg moved to 4-0 and earned its third win over a top-20 foe this season.
The Bullets won each of the first two draws and turned those opening possessions into goals. Junior
Maggie Welsh (Rye, N.Y./Holy Child) scored off a feed from classmate
Katie Landry (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) at 27:57 before Landry scored 26 seconds later. Welsh tacked on another goal to make it 3-0 with 23:18 in the first half.
Washington and Lee was held to just six shots in the opening half as Gettysburg extended its lead to 6-2 on a goal by senior
Caroline Jaeger (Hampton, N.J./North Hunterdon) with 6:34 remaining in the period. Hayley Soutter tossed in her second of three goals on the day to cut the deficit to three heading into the break.
Senior goalie
Shannon Keeler (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown), who moved into a tie for second place on Gettysburg's career wins list (51), recorded four of her five saves in the second period as the Generals tallied only one more goal. A stop by Keeler at 22:53 helped set the stage for a goal by Colson and kick off a four-goal run to end the game.
Gettysburg led in shots (16-13), ground balls (14-11), and draw controls (10-7).
Welsh finished with two goals, Landry posted one goal and three assists, and freshman
Courtney Patterson (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) tallied one goal and one assist. Sophomore
Brooke Holechek (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep) came up with two ground balls and a caused turnover. Colson added four draw controls and junior
Cassie Smith (Phoenix, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) logged two draw controls, a ground ball, and a caused turnover.
Gettysburg heads to Port Charlotte, Fla., for a pair of games this week. The Bullets face No. 13 Hamilton College on Tuesday at 5 p.m. Then the team squares off with SUNY Fredonia on Thursday at 5 p.m.
