Geoff Fulgione (North Andover, Mass./Brooks School) won the final six face-offs and junior
Tommy Heller (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) and sophomore
Brian Kolen (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) each scored two goals during a decisive 6-0 closing run to lift No. 13 Gettysburg College past Goucher College 14-8 in a non-conference men's lacrosse contest.
After Goucher (1-1) tied the game with 13:22 to play, Gettysburg (2-0) ran off the last six tallies over the final 11:28. Fulgione won every face-off during the run and finished 18-of-23 on face-offs in the game, setting a new personal high for face-off victories. The senior also grabbed a career-high eight ground balls.
Kolen set a career high for the second-straight game with four goals and he dished out two assists for a personal best six points. The sophomore also grabbed three ground balls. Heller, junior
Jack Harvey (New Providence, N.J./New Providence), and freshman
Jack Fletcher (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) each posted two goals and two assists, while junior
Andrew Garstka (Springfield, Va./Paul VI Catholic) tossed in a pair of tallies.
Tucker Corrigan and Zephan Harnish each posted three goals and an assist , while goalie Matt Messerle stopped 18 shots for Goucher.
Harvey put the Bullets on the board with a man-up goal to start the game, but the Gophers converted a pair of power plays to take a 2-1 lead. Four goals by the visitors, including back-to-back tallies by Kolen, set the advantage at 5-2.
Harnish and Corrigan scored or assisted on Goucher's next three goals to slice the deficit to 6-5 midway through the second quarter. The Bullets headed into halftime leading 8-5 after goals by Harvey and Garstka.
Gettysburg was shut out in the third quarter, committing four turnovers and shooting twice into Messerle's stick. The Gophers took advantage with a three-goal run ending with a game-tying tally by Corrigan with 13:22 to go.
Goucher had three shots to tie the game on the next possession, but Gettysburg's smothering defense prevented a clear shot at the cage. The Bullets came right back up the field and senior
Mike Risser (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East) broke the deadlock off a feed by Fletcher. Fulgione won the next face-off and Fletcher made it a two-goal lead (10-8) one minute later.
The Bullets scored four times in the final 3:49 and only allowed Goucher to possess the ball for a total of 31 seconds. Both Heller and Kolen scored twice in the final minutes.
Gettysburg finished with the edge in shots (53-25) and ground balls (36-14), while winning 20-of-25 face-offs overall.
Sophomore
Christian Atalese (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) posted two caused turnovers and two ground balls, while Risser picked up four ground balls. Junior
Ryan Kelly (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) and sophomore
Eric Carr (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Academy of the New Church) each picked up three ground balls. Senior
Tim Brady (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) posted six saves in goal.
Gettysburg hosts top-ranked Salisbury University this Saturday at 1 p.m. The two teams competed in an epic confrontation last spring with the top-ranked Sea Gulls edging the Bullets 10-9 in overtime.
