VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Gettysburg College baseball team busted out 16 hits on the way to their first win of the season as they defeated the University of Northwestern (Minn.) 9-7 on Tuesday afternoon in Historic Dodgertown.
The Bullets (1-7) had six different players record multiple hits on the afternoon. Freshman
Matt Berube (Lutz, Fla. /Steinbrenner) led the Bullets with four hits, including two doubles, while batting in two runs. Fellow classmate
Sean Murphy (Westfield, Mass. /Westfield) was a home run short of a cycle as he ripped a single, double and triple while scoring two runs.
Sophomore
Banks Northington (Charlottesville, Va. /Charlottesville), sophomore
Joe Giovinco (Stirling, N.J. /Seton Hall Prep) and senior
Logan Sneed (Newtown, Pa. /Germantown Academy) each had two hits and two runs scored. Sneed added two RBIs while Northington added one of his own.
Junior
Will Wortmann (Bedford, N.Y. /Fox Lane) started on the mound and threw 4 1/3 innings for the Bullets. He held the Eagles to three hits and four runs, two earned, while striking out four.
Sophomore
Danny Brace (Berwyn, Pa. /Devon Prep) came in relief for the Bullets and recorded the win. He gave up zero hits over 3 2/3 innings and struck out three while giving up two runs. Freshman
Ryan Kirkpatrick (Highland Mills, N.Y. /Monroe Woodbury) made his collegiate debut and closed out the game for the Bullets in the ninth when he came into a bases loaded situation and got three straight outs to record his first career save.
The Bullets jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning and would lead the rest of the game. Gettysburg extended the lead to 6-0 when Berube ripped a double to right field that plate Giovinco and Northington.
Northwestern (1-3) wouldn't let down any fight as they cut the lead down to 6-5 by taking advantage of some mistakes by the Bullets to score four runs in the bottom of the fifth and adding another run in the bottom of the seventh.
Sneed provided a pair of insurance runs for the Orange and Blue when he hit a double to right field that brought in two runs, making the game 8-5. Freshman
Matt Szczesny (Schwenksville, Pa./ Periomen) added to the lead when he plated Sneed with a single to right field.
The Eagles would get back two more runs in the bottom of the ninth before Kirkpatrick would seal the victory for the Bullets at 9-7.
The Bullets take a day off before they return to action on Thursday at 10 a.m. when they take on the University of Scranton.
