Probst, Bullets Sweep Norwich in Florida Finale

Senior Goes 8-for-9 Over Twinbill

VERO BEACH, Fla. – Senior Chuck Probst (North Bend, Pa./Bucktail) recorded a spectacular day at the plate and the Gettysburg College baseball team closed out its Spring Break trip on a high note on Saturday with a sweep of Norwich University.

Playing in Holman Stadium, part of "Historic Dodgertown," the Bullets (5-8) stayed hot offensively. One day after ripping 29 hits in doubleheader sweep, Gettysburg pounded 34 more hits on Saturday. The Bullets used a 15-hit attack to win the opener 11-6, then piled up 19 safeties in a 17-2 victory in the nightcap, sending Norwich to 0-12.

Gettysburg also swept Marywood on Friday and finishes its southern swing on a four-game winning streak.

The Bullets' 17 runs in the second game marked the team's highest scoring output since a 17-6 victory at McDaniel on April 27, 2016.

Probst finished the day 8-for-9 with four doubles, four runs, and five RBIs while posting the second and third four-hit games of his career. He also went 4-for-4 in a win over Penn State Altoona last season.

On the mound, junior Sam Dobbins (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) tossed five innings of one-run ball to earn the victory in the opener before freshman Dan Ball (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) fired a seven-hit complete game in the nightcap. Both pitchers earned their first collegiate victories.

Gettysburg never trailed in either game and jumped to a 6-0 lead after two innings in the opener. Sophomore Ryan LaCoe (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) slugged a two-run homer in the bottom of the first for his first collegiate long ball before the Bullets posted a four-run, five-hit second that included a triple from Probst.

The Cadets scored a run in the third, only to see Gettysburg answer with three runs over the fourth and fifth to push its lead to 9-1. Norwich threatened with five runs over the last two innings, but it was too little too late. The Bullets tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth after the Cadets had trimmed the deficit to 9-5 with a four spot in the top of the inning.

Probst went 4-for-4 with two doubles, two runs, and two RBIs in the opener while sophomore Joe Giovinco (Stirling, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) finished 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Freshman Sean Murphy (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) and sophomore Banks Northington (Charlottesville, Va./Charlottesville) added two hits apiece while LaCoe totaled three RBIs.

Dobbins (1-1) scattered five hits, did not walk a batter, and fanned three while tying the longest outing of his career.

In the second game, the Bullets put the game out of reach early, exploding for nine runs in the second inning in which they ripped seven hits and sent 13 batters to the plate. After Norwich retired the first batter of the inning, Gettysburg's next eight batters reached base. Sophomore Tyler Mitchell (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) drilled two hits in the frame, including a two-out, two-run double that made it 8-0.

The Cadets came back with two runs in the bottom of the second before the Bullets settled any doubt with eight more runs over the next three innings. Gettysburg set the final score with a four-run fifth in which it scored all its runs with two outs, ripping five straight hits. Senior Josh Cubell (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) and Probst capped the inning with back-to-back two-run doubles.

Ball (1-1) allowed just three hits over his last five innings, but worked out of jams in the fifth and sixth, leaving runners on the corners in both innings. He retired his last five batters and finished with three walks and four strikeouts.

Probst went 4-for-5 with two more doubles, two runs, and three RBIs in the nightcap. Mitchell and senior Tyler Sadowski (Manchester, Pa./North Carroll) each posted their first career four-hit games, with Mitchell going 4-for-4 with two doubles, three runs, and two RBIs. Sadowski registered a nearly identical performance, finishing 4-for-4 with a double, three runs, and a pair of RBIs. Cubell went 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs while Murphy drove in three runs.

Gettysburg is slated to play its home opener on Tuesday, when it takes on Penn State Mont Alto at 3:30 p.m.
