Top-Ranked Gettysburg Downs Muhlenberg

Bullets remain perfect with 14-5 decision

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – There would be no letdown for Gettysburg College this time around against Muhlenberg College as the top-ranked Bullets scored the first 13 goals and finished with a 14-5 win in Centennial Conference women's lacrosse action at Clark Field.

Gettysburg (8-0, 2-0 CC) remained perfect on the year heading into a big showdown with No. 10 Franklin & Marshall College (7-3, 2-0 CC) next Wednesday. The Bullets scored 12 goals in the opening half and put the game on cruise control for the remaining 30 minutes.

Senior Katie Willis (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) scored three goals and an assist, while freshman Kerry McKeever (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) tossed in three goals. Senior Katie Landry (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) and sophomore Liza Barr (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) each scored a pair of goals with Landry also dishing out two assists.

After falling to Muhlenberg (5-3, 1-1 CC) 8-7 as the top-ranked team in the country last spring, Gettysburg came out firing Saturday. McKeever started the scoring on a free-position shot at 28:36 and just 37 seconds later, Landry provided a highlight-reel goal, going behind her back off a feed from Willis to make it 2-0.

McKeever left everyone behind on her way to the cage for her second goal which made it 5-0 with 21:08 left in the first half. The Bullets clamped down on Muhlenberg's attack and did not allow a single shot in the opening 10 minutes of action. Junior goalie Bailey Pilder (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) turned away the first of her five first-half saves on a shot by Amanda Tullo with 19:37 on the clock in the first half.

Gettysburg continued to pour it on in the first half with four goals over the final 8:34 of play. Willis fired in a pair of goals before junior Lauren Cole (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) and sophomore Ella Orzechowski (Elkridge, Md./Howard) gave the hosts a 12-0 advantage heading into the break.

Landry added a goal at the start of the second period and Gettysburg quickly sent in the reserves for the rest of the game.

Gettysburg led in shots (30-16), ground balls (22-8), and draw controls (12-9).

Junior Steph Colson (Westminster, Md./Manchester Valley) tallied two assists, three ground balls, four draw controls, and a caused turnover. McKeever also grabbed four draws, while senior Elsie Wagner (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga Valley) managed two caused turnovers and a ground ball. Senior Ali Gorab (Southport, Conn./Ludlowe) corralled a pair of ground balls.

Gettysburg meets F&M on Wednesday, April 4, at 4 p.m. The Bullets won the regular-season meeting 12-6 in Lancaster last season, but the Diplomats won the rematch in the conference championship game in double overtime 7-6. F&M leads the all-time series 32-31-1.
