Stevenson, Md. – The Gettysburg bats came alive in their second game of the season but the Bullets were not able to hold on to a five run, last inning lead and fell 8-7 to Stevenson on Tuesday evening in a non-conference affair that was called early due to weather and darkness.
Four different Bullets roped multiple hits, including senior
Chuck Probst (Norht Bend, Pa. /Bucktail), who went 2-for-2 with a triple, two RBIs and walk. Senior
Logan Sneed (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy) went 2-for-3 while walking once. Sophomore
Ryan LaCoe (Hershey, Pa. /Hershey) and freshman
Sean Murphy (Westfield, Mass. /Westfield) both had a pair of hits while batting in two runs apiece. LaCoe and sophomore
Banks Northington (Charlottesville, Va. /Charlottesville) both had doubles on the evening.
Freshman
Erik Wortmann (Garden City, N.Y. /Garden City) started on the mound for Gettysburg (0-2) and had a strong collegiate debut. He received a no decision, yielding three runs on seven hits over 6 innings. He struck out four while walking none.
Gettysburg jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when Murray hit a single through the left side, scoring two runs for the Bullets in the top of the first. After a run by the Mustangs in the bottom of the first, Probst ripped a triple to the left center gap that plated two more runs and gave the Bullets at 4-1 lead. In the sixth, LaCoe gave Gettysburg their biggest lead of the game when he hit a two RBI double to go up 7-3.
The Mustangs rallied in the bottom of the seventh to score five runs against three different Bullet relievers. The game was called after the seventh inning due to weather and darkness, giving Stevenson the 8-7 victory.
The Bullets return to action on Thursday when they travel to Messiah College for another non-conference meet up at 3 p.m.
