No. 2 Gettysburg Stifles Dickinson in Victory

Bullets hold Red Devils to one goal over final 43 minutes

CARLISLE, Pa. – Second-ranked Gettysburg College held host Dickinson College to one goal over the final 43 minutes on the way to a 13-5 victory in Centennial Conference women's lacrosse action at Biddle Field on Wednesday.

Gettysburg (11-1, 5-1 CC) only led 5-4 over Dickinson (6-7, 3-3 CC) through the first 17 minutes of action, but the Bullets ended the game on an 8-1 run.

Senior Maggie McClain (Wexford, Pa./Sewickley Academy) posted two goals and two assists, while sophomores Liza Barr (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) and Courtney Patterson (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) and freshman Kerry McKeever (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) each contributed two goals and one assist. Juniors Steph Colson (Westminster, Md./Manchester Valley) and Lauren Cole (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) each scored a pair of goals with the former also adding three ground balls, two caused turnovers, and six draw controls.

Senior Ali Gorab (Southport, Conn./Ludlowe) paced the defense with a career-high four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Junior Brooke Holechek (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep) logged three ground balls and two caused turnovers, while senior Elsie Wagner (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) tallied three ground balls and a caused turnover. Junior goalie Bailey Pilder (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) recorded six saves.

Anne Dunster paced the hosts with two goals and an assist. Mack Maurer dished out three assists and Laurie Travaglini finished with three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Goalie Avery Priest posted eight saves for the Red Devils.

Patterson posted the game's first two goals, but Dickinson remained in the hunt and trailed by just a goal following back-to-back tallies by Dunster 27 seconds apart midway through the first half. McClain kick-started a three-goal run as Gettysburg went into the break leading 8-4.

Sam Marmo scored the opening goal of the second half for Dickinson. That would be the team's final tally as Gettysburg's defense posted a shutout over the final 26 minutes. The Red Devils turned the ball over eight times and Pilder made a trio of stops during that span.

The Bullets answered immediately after Marmo's goal with Cole picking up an unassisted tally. Colson added a free-position goal to make it 10-5 with 23:33 left.

Each of Gettysburg's final three goals followed Dickinson turnovers, including McClain's final score with 1:49 on the clock.

The Bullets doubled up the Red Devils in shots (34-17), while also leading in ground balls (18-12) and draw controls (15-4).
