GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg nearly pulled off an incredible comeback, scoring six times in the bottom of the ninth in a 10-9 loss to Juniata in non-conference baseball action Tuesday afternoon at a sunny Kirchhoff Field.
Â
The Bullets had the tying run on first base but Juniata induced a pop-out to end the game after Gettysburg sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning.
Â
Gettysburg (12-23) collected 13 hits for the game, with senior
Chuck Probst (North Bend, Pa./Bucktail), freshman
Sean Murphy (Westfield, Mass./Westfield), and freshman
Kobi Wolf (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) leading the way with two hits apiece. Sophomore
Ryan Augustus (Freehold, N.J./Princeton Day School) added a home run and four RBIs.
Â
Trailing 10-3 heading into the ninth, the Bullets came roaring back against reliever Jesse Beeler, as the first six batters reached base. Wolf got things started with an infield single before senior
Jack Seibert (Yardley, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) was hit with a pitch. Freshman
Sinjin Smith (Nazareth, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) blasted an RBI-double over the centerfielder for his first collegiate hit before Probst and senior
Tyler Sadowski (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) stroked back-to-back run scoring singles, making it a 10-6 game. Murphy followed with another towering RBI-double to center as the Bullets pulled to within three.
Â
Beeler then rolled up back-to-back groundouts, but the second one brought home another run that made it 10-8. Murphy moved to third on a wild pitch, then scored on an infield single from sophomore
Tyler Mitchell (Arnold, Md./Broadneck), who represented the tying run before Beeler ended the game on a pop-up to second.
Â
Juniata (11-26) never trailed after jumping to a 6-0 lead over the first 5 1/2 innings. The Eagles scored three in the first versus junior starter
Jonny Bray (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) before adding two in the fourth. The visitors pushed across another run in the sixth versus freshman reliever
Erik Wortmann (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City).
Â
Gettysburg cut the deficit in half when Augustus blasted a majestic three-run homer over the leftfield fence in the bottom of the sixth, marking his team-leading fourth long ball of the season. But Juniata answered with four runs in the eighth to assume their 10-3 lead, setting up the Bullets' epic comeback.
Â
Austin Suders (3-2) started on the mound for Juniata and earned the win, allowing three runs and striking out eight over seven innings. Bray (1-2) pitched 3 2/3 innings and was charged with the loss.
Â
The Bullets conclude their season on Wednesday, when they host Messiah at 3:30 p.m. in another non-conference outing.
