Men’s Lax Storms Into NCAA Quarterfinals

Bullets Set Program Record for Goals in an NCAA Game

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Third-ranked Gettysburg set a program record for goals in an NCAA playoff game, racing past Rhodes College 22-9 in the third round of the Division III men's lacrosse tournament on Saturday at an unseasonably warm Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.

Four different Bullets racked up four goals as Gettysburg rolled into the quarterfinals. The Orange and Blue will now take on the winner of Saturday night's third-round matchup between No. 10 Denison and No. 11 Ohio Wesleyan.

With its victory, Gettysburg (18-2) has now posted its second-highest win total in program history. Only the 2015 squad, which finished 20-1, compiled more victories.

The Bullets had never scored 20 goals in an NCAA contest prior to Saturday. Gettysburg scored 19 in tournament wins over Catholic in 2015 and Widener in 2000.

Leading Gettysburg with four goals and one assist apiece were junior Jack Harvey (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) and sophomores Brian Kolen (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) and Michael McCormick (Lorton, Va./Paul VI Catholic) while junior Andrew Garstka (Springfield, Va./Paul VI Catholic) also poured in four goals. Kolen also surpassed 100 career points and became just the eighth Bullet in program history to score 50 goals in a season.

Freshman Kadin Kightlinger (Purcellville, Va./Bishop O'Connell) contributed a season-high three goals and one assist for Gettysburg while classmate Jack Fletcher (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) netted two goals and a season-high four assists.

The Bullets had a big day on face-offs, going 23-for-35. Sophomore Connor Hunt (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) finished 12-for-15 and picked up a career-high eight ground balls while tossing in a goal for good measure. Senior Geoff Fulgione (North Andover, Mass./Brooks School) went 9-for-16 at the X.

Senior Tim Brady (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) made six saves to pick up the victory in goal.

Rhodes (14-3), champions of the Southern Athletic Association, was making its debut in the NCAA tournament and playing just its second NCAA playoff game. The Lynx saw their eight-game winning streak come to an end.

The opening four and a half minutes were close, and Rhodes jumped to an early 2-1 lead. However, the Bullets quickly put the game out of reach, reeling off a 9-0 run over a 14:40 span. Gettysburg closed the final 9:08 of the first quarter on a 5-0 run, then snapped off four tallies over the opening 4:32 of the second period to open up a 10-2 advantage.

The Lynx stopped the bleeding with 5:45 remaining, but the Bullets ended the half on a 3-0 spurt to assume a 13-3 halftime lead.

Gettysburg continued to pour it on in the second half, outscoring the Lynx 4-3 in the third quarter, then striking for the first six goals of the final stanza to open up a 22-6 surplus. Rhodes netted the final three goals to set the final score.

The Bullets racked up decided advantages in shots (53-29) and ground balls (42-21).
