Top-Ranked Bullets Win Big Over No. 14 TCNJ

Gettysburg dispatches Lions 16-5

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior goalie Bailey Pilder (Rowayton, Conn./New Canaan) recorded a career-high 14 saves and junior Liza Barr (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) scored six goals as top-ranked Gettysburg College recorded its biggest victory ever against The College of New Jersey with a 16-5 decision at Clark Field Thursday night.

Gettysburg (8-0) ran its winning streak to 18 games and posted a larger margin of victory (11) than its previous seven wins over TCNJ (4-4) combined (10). The Bullets also recorded their third-straight win over the 14th-ranked Lions dating back to the 2017 NCAA Division III Championship game. TCNJ lost its third consecutive game.

Pilder set the defensive tone with six saves before TCNJ finally found the back of the net midway through the first half. The senior topped her previous personal best for saves by one, which was notched in last season's meeting with the Lions. Pilder also scooped up three ground balls.

Barr bested her personal record for goals by one and reached the 50-point plateau for the season. She tallied three goals at the start of the second half as part of a 10-0 run by the Bullets. Senior Steph Colson (Westminster, Md./Manchester Valley) tallied two goals, five assists, and six draw controls, while senior Lauren Cole (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) and freshman Bri Stokes (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) came up with two goals and three assists. Junior Ella Orzechowski (Elkridge, Md./Howard) tallied one goal and two assists.

Alex Fitzpatrick scored three goals and Erin Harvey tallied a goal, three ground balls, six draw controls, and two caused turnovers for TCNJ. Goalie Miranda Chrone posted five saves.

Gettysburg's attack scored on each of its first three shots as Colson tossed in the first two and Barr added the third just over four minutes into the contest. The Bullets hit a lull as Chrone posted three stops over the next 10 minutes, allowing the Lions a chance to answer. After Talia Bouzakis scored TCNJ's first goal, Alex Fitzpatrick tossed in two more to tie the game 3-3 with 9:27 left in the first half.

The Bullets seized momentum with the final four goals of the opening period. Cole had a hand in three of the tallies, scoring twice on precision feeds to the middle by Colson before dishing out a pass to sophomore Kerry McKeever (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) with nine second left in the period. Gettysburg cruised into the break with a 7-3 lead.

Barr quickly squashed any hope of a comeback by TCNJ with three goals to open the final stanza, the first two coming on feeds from Cole and the last on an incredible catch-and-shoot play in front of the cage on a feed from Orzechowski with 22:21 to play.

The good times kept rolling for the Bullets with Orzechowski, Stokes, and junior Courtney Patterson (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central) completing the 10-goal run and putting Gettysburg ahead 13-3 with 18 minutes to play.

Pilder put an exclamation point on her day by stopping three consecutive shots by All-Americans Harvey, Kathleen Jaeger, and Olivia Cleale over a four-minute span late in the second half. Barr and sophomore Maddy Ruffini (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) scored a pair of goals in the final minutes to cap the victory.

Gettysburg finished 22-of-23 on clears thanks to Colson, Patterson, and junior defender Claire Macatee (Street, Md./North Harford). TCNJ led in shots (33-31) and ground balls (13-10), while the Bullets won the battle in the draw circle 13-10.

Gettysburg returns to Centennial Conference action at Muhlenberg College Saturday at 1 p.m.
