Bullets Rally Past No. 23 Dickinson

No. 2 Gettysburg gets by Red Devils 15-11

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Courtney Patterson (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central) and sophomore Kerry McKeever (Stony Brook, N.Y./Warde Melville) each scored four goals as second-ranked Gettysburg College rallied past No. 23 Dickinson College for a 15-11 decision in a Centennial Conference women's lacrosse showdown on Wednesday.

Gettysburg (12-1, 5-1 CC) trailed 10-9 with 23:04 to play against Dickinson (9-4, 4-2 CC). McKeever and Patterson tallied back-to-back goals to kick off a 4-0 run to regain the lead for good and the Bullets ended the game with six of the final seven goals overall.

McKeever tallied four goals, two assists, and three draw controls, while Patterson tossed in four goals and grabbed seven draw controls. Sophomore Bri Stokes (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) turned in a hat trick and junior Liza Barr (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) posted two goals and one assist. Senior goalie Bailey Pilder (Rowayton, Conn./New Canaan) recorded 10 saves and junior Ella Orzechowski (Elkridge, Md./Howard) posted three caused turnovers and two ground balls.

Greta Holt led Dickinson with four goals, including three consecutive tallies spanning the first and second periods to tie the game. She also dished out an assist and tracked down nine draw controls. Eleanor Kaestner added two goals, while goalie Drew Yager logged five saves.

The Red Devils attacked the goal early on with three of the first four goals in the game. Dunster scored 49 seconds into the contest and back-to-back goals by Laurie Travaglini and Kaestner made it 3-1 with 23:43 to play in the first half.

Gettysburg still trailed by two goals after Mack Maurer converted a free-position attempt with less than 17 minutes to go in the period. It didn't take long for the hosts to answer as Patterson grabbed the ensuing draw and McKeever scored less than a minute later. Patterson and McKeever had a hand in every goal during a 5-0 run with the junior breaking through the defense for an unassisted tally to make it 8-5 with 5:23 remaining before halftime.

The teams exchanged goals before Holt scored on a free-position attempt with 18 seconds left in the period to make it 9-7 at half.

Holt continued flashing to the cage and tossed in the first two goals of the final period. Dunster found Chase Landis for another goal to give Dickinson the lead once again at 10-9.

Just 37 seconds later, McKeever would not be denied on a free-position attempt to tie the contest. Pilder came up with a pair of saves on Dickinson's next two possessions and the Bullets eventually pulled in front on a free-position shot by Patterson with 17:52 to play.

Barr drew a foul in the scoring area 50 seconds later and looked for junior Maria Nemeth (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) in front of the goal. The ball was knocked loose, but Nemeth tracked it down and shoveled it into the goal for a 12-10 advantage.

Gettysburg quieted the Red Devils over the next 12 minutes with Pilder posting a pair of stops and senior Katrina Niedziela (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) and sophomore Sara Howard (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) each causing turnovers. The Bullets took advantage of a yellow card on Dickinson with a free-position goal by Barr with 6:43 left.

Dickinson picked up a goal by Erika Bloes a minute later, but the Red Devils were unable to crack the Gettysburg defense in the final minutes, coughing the ball up on each of their final three possessions. Both McKeever and Stokes scored to set the final margin.

Dickinson led in shots (29-26), ground balls (13-9), and draw controls (15-13).
