BRYN MAWR, Pa. – Junior Ava Vanhelfteren (Fort Wayne, Ind./Canterbury) blanked her opponent at fifth singles to clinch the decisive point for Gettysburg College in a 5-4 victory over Bryn Mawr College in a Centennial Conference women's tennis match Saturday afternoon.
 
Gettysburg (10-5, 5-2 CC) secured its first 10-win season since 2010 and won its third one-point decision in conference play this spring. The Bullets maintained a spot among the top five in the league standings, sitting fourth behind Swarthmore College (9-4, 5-1 CC).
 
The Orange and Blue missed a doubles sweep by the slimmest of margins. Seniors Maria Martinovic (Lawrence Township, N.J./Princeton Day School) and Maddie Class (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) opened with an 8-4 win at No. 2, while Vanhelfteren and sophomore Shaye Barnes (Rye, N.Y./Rye) secured an 8-5 victory at the third flight. The top team of junior Samantha Boardman (Greenwich, Conn./Brooks School) and sophomore Amanda Vinges (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) lost to Amalia Parrish and Audrey Camacho in a tiebreaker at No. 1 singles 8-7 (7-5).
 
Boardman and Class put Gettysburg on the brink of the team victory by claiming wins at third singles (6-1, 6-1) and fourth singles (6-2, 6-2), respectively. Camacho kept the Owls in the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Vinges at the second flight.
 
Vanhelfteren, who provided the match-clinching point in a 5-4 win over Washington College two weeks ago, secured the win by laying down a pair of bagels (6-0, 6-0) on Christina Xue at No. 6. Bryn Mawr closed the day with wins at No. 1 and No. 6.
 
Gettysburg hosts Swarthmore Monday at 4 p.m.
