GETTYSBURG, Pa. – For the first time since 2006, the Gettysburg College women's tennis team took down Centennial Conference opponent Dickinson College 5-4 on a sunny, but windy day at the Bullets Tennis Courts Wednesday.
The Bullets (7-4) ended the Red Devils (5-5) streak against them of twelve-straight victories. With today's win, the Bullets are now 2-1 in conference play.
In the 45-year old rivalry between the two teams, the Bullets went on top 2-1 after doubles play. Junior
Samantha Boardman (Greenwich, Conn./Brooks School) and sophomore
Amanda Vinges (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) won the 8-3 decision at the top doubles flight, while the senior duo of
Maria Martinovic (Lawrence Township, N.J./Princeton Day School) and
Maddie Class (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) posted an 8-5 win at the No. 2 doubles. Sophomore
Shaye Barnes (Rye, N.Y./Rye) and junior
Ava Vanhelfteren (Fort Wayne, Ind./Canterbury) fell 8-6 at the No. 3 doubles.
The Bullets started the singles round with two losses, but bounced back by winning three of the next four. Martinovic grabbed the first singles win at the top flight by the final scores of 6-2, 6-4, improving her season record to 8-3. Vinges collected her third-straight match victory at the second position (6-3, 6-3), and Boardman registered the final win at No. 3 singles (7-5, 6-1) and now holds a 6-1 record.
Gettysburg hosts No. 25 Swarthmore College on Friday at 4 p.m.
