Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Barr Sets Assist Record, Bullets Breeze Past Westminster in NCAA Opener

Junior Liza Barr tallied an NCAA Tournament record 13 assists Sunday.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Junior Liza Barr (Medford, N.J.) broke the NCAA Tournament record for assists in a game and the school mark for points in a game as top-ranked Gettysburg College women's lacrosse team cruised past Westminster (Pa.) College 24-1 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship Sunday at Clark Field.

With the continual rain and cooler temperatures, Gettysburg (18-1) continued to stay dominant coming off its Centennial Conference championship last weekend. The Bullets tallied their program record with its sixth 20-goal outburst of the season and won 22-of-26 draws and forced Westminster into 16 turnovers.

After scoring its first-ever NCAA win over Notre Dame of Maryland University, Westminster (15-3) was faced with a fresh Gettysburg squad on Clark Field. The Titans only had 10 shots to the Bullets 45.

Barr dished out a whopping 13 assists to set the new NCAA record for most in a tournament game. Blake Hargest from Franklin & Marshall College held the previous record with nine that she set back in 2007. Barr also finished with 15 points overall (two goals, 13 assists), breaking the 33-year old school record that was held by Amanda Carroon. Caroon produced 14 points (seven goals, seven assists) against Johns Hopkins University in 1986. Barr also recorded her 200th career point (108 goals, 97 assists for 205 points), becoming the 15th player in Gettysburg history to accomplish the feat.

Senior Lauren Cole (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) scored the first tally on the second shot attempt 51 seconds into the first half. Classmate Steph Colson (Westminster, Md./Manchester Valley) followed up by scoring 38 seconds later to go ahead 2-0.

Westminster's Michaela Hays cut the deficit in half at the 27:11 marker. However, that would be the lone goal for the Titans as the Bullets offense rattled off 15 more goals before the end of the first half with five coming from sophomore Kerry McKeever (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) and three from sophomore Bri Stokes (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury).

There was no letting up for the Bullets in the final half as the team continued to thrive, spurting another seven goals and holding the Titans to just five shots. Sophomore Kerry Ullman (Fairfield, Conn./Academy of Our Lady of Mercy) led the way for the Orange and Blue in the frame as she accumulated three goals, while fellow classmate Maddy Ruffini (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) collected two goals and an assist. Barr broke the tournament assist record five minutes into the second half off Ruffini's goal.

The Bullets saw 11 different players reach the scoring column with McKeever leading the way in goals with five and a team-high eight draw controls. McKeever ended the game scoring her 100th career goal, 103 overall. Stokes and Ullman finished with three goals each.

Junior Courtney Patterson (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) registered her 100th career point (88 goals, 13 assists for 101 points) after finishing today's game with two goals and an assist. She also chipped in two draw controls, two caused turnovers, and six ground balls.

Senior goalie Bailey Pilder (Rowayton, Conn./New Canaan) made three saves in 22 minutes of action, while junior Casey Cole (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) also had three stops.

Gettysburg will host the regional round set for May 18-19. The Bullets will face Denison University (15-4), which defeated Transylvania University 19-6, in the next round on Saturday, while Washington and Lee University takes on Wesleyan University with a time to be determined.
