No. 4 Christopher Newport Runs Past No. 10 Gettysburg

Captains score first 11 goals on the way to 17-11 decision

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – No. 4 Christopher Newport University (8-0) scored the first 11 goals on the way to a 17-11 decision against No. 10 Gettysburg College (5-2) as part of the Mustang Classic hosted by Stevenson University on Friday.

How It Happened…
  • First Quarter
    • Gettysburg was on its heels early in the opening period as Christopher Newport ripped off eight goals. The Captains scored their first goal at 12:59 and added a second tally six seconds later. Christopher Newport committed just one turnover in the opening 15 minutes and Rice had a hand in four scores, including the period's final tally with 26 seconds left.
  • Second Quarter
    • Christopher Newport posted three more goals in 75 seconds and took an 11-0 lead on a shot by Will Stockhausen with 11:39 left in the half. Howard turned in Gettysburg's first goal with an unassisted tally at 10:42, but Hanway stopped two more shots by the Bullets over the next three minutes.
    • Koch and Raymond turned in back-to-back goals before the Captains ended the first half with two goals to take a 14-3 lead.
  • Third Quarter
    • Rice scored the first goal just a minute into the second half to push the advantage to 15-3. MacMillan put a stop to a man-up situation for the Captains by saving a shot by Andrew Cook and the Bullets came back with Kinsella scoring off a feed from Howard.
    • Following a man-up goal for Gettysburg, freshman defenseman Thomas Ciccarone (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) found an opening and tossed in his first collegiate goal to cut the deficit down to 15-6.
    • The two teams traded goals to end the period with Gettysburg pulling to 16-7 on a goal by freshman Jack Dunleavy (New Providence, N.J./Seton Hall Prep).
  • Fourth Quarter
    • Miller scored to regain a 10-goal lead for the Captains early in the fourth period. The opposing goalies traded four saves over the next three minutes until a man-up goal by the Bullets at 6:21. Gettysburg scored the final four goals with Raymond closing the scoring with his second tally at 1:05.
 
By the Numbers
  • Gettysburg led in shots (49-38) and ground balls (37-32). Christopher Newport controlled one more face-off (16-15) and committed one more turnover (14-13).
  • Raymond posted his fourth goal of the season with at least five points. The junior attackman leads the team with 16 goals, 14 assists, and 30 points this spring.
  • With Kinsella and Ciccarone each recording their first goals of the season, Gettysburg has had 24 different players score a goal this spring.
 
Where the Series Stands
Friday's meeting was the first between Gettysburg and Christopher Newport in lacrosse.
