Spartans net game-winner with 2:55 remaining in regulation

Gettysburg, Pa. - No. 6 York College scored twice in the final seven minutes of Saturday's non-conference men's lacrosse showdown at No. 15 Gettysburg College to rally for a 9-8 victory at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.

Will Harnick scored the game-winner with 2:55 remaining in regulation to lift the Spartans (12-2) to their 10th consecutive victory.

York sandwiched a pair of goals around a man-up tally from senior Spencer Knife (Venice, Calif./Winston Churchill) to put the Bullets' lead at 3-2 at the end of the first quarter.

The Spartans leveled the score 59 seconds into the second stanza, but Gettysburg netted the final three markers of the period. Back-to-back goals from Mather followed by Knife's second tally of the day gave the hosts a 6-3 halftime advantage.

York came out strong after the intermission, using a four-goal surge in the third quarter to claim a 7-6 edge heading into the final 15 minutes of play.

The Bullets battled back in the fourth quarter, leveling the contest at seven-apiece when junior George Raymond (Darien, Conn./Suffield Academy) found the back of the net off a feed from fellow junior Connor Koch (Glenview, Ill./Loyola Academy) with 8:57 remaining.

Just 47 seconds later, Mather fired home his fourth goal of the game off an assist from senior Kieran Ward (Malvern, Pa./Malvern Prep) to put Gettysburg back in front, 8-7.

The Spartans knotted the contest back up at the 6:49 mark before getting the eventual game-winner from Harnick with just under three minutes left on the clock.

Gettysburg narrowly missed out on another equalizer as a shot by Knife with just over 20 seconds remaining went high as the visitors held on for the victory.

Knife (2 goals), Raymond (1 goal, 1 assist), and Ward (2 assists) joined Mather with multi-point efforts in the loss.

Junior Jonathan Moshe (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L Vandermeulen) led the Bullets with eight groundballs while going 10-for-21 on face-offs.
