Gettysburg, Pa. - Dickinson College broke a 3-3 tie with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning of Wednesday's Centennial Conference baseball game at Gettysburg College and held on for a 5-4 victory at Kirchhoff Field.
Â
The Red Devils (16-14, 4-7 CC) opened the scoring on Wednesday with a three-run third inning. Following an error by the Bullets, Lukas Atsali hit a two-run double before coming home on a Cole Hare double to give the visitors a 3-0 advantage.
Â
The Bullets (15-16, 6-5 CC) used a three-run inning of their own in the home fourth to knot the score back up at 3-3.
Â
Senior
Matt Muir (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) came in with the host's first run courtesy of a sacrifice fly from sophomore
David Preziuso (Middletown, Del./Caravel Academy). Â
Â
Junior
Matthew Peipher (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) then connected on a two-run triple that plated sophomore
Tristan Neels (San Diego, Calif./Francis W. Parker) and senior
Andrew Decker (Baltimore, Md./Towson).
Â
The score remained tied until the visitor's seventh when Dickinson pushed two runs across to take a 5-3 lead. Atsali scored on a triple from Hare, who was then brought in by a Mark Torres sacrifice fly.
Â
Gettysburg drew back to within a run in the bottom of the seventh when junior
Preston Toothman (Orlando, Fla./William R. Boone) drove in senior
Mark Seibert (Yardley, Pa./Holy Ghost Preparatory) with a double.
Â
That would mark the end of the scoring, though, as Seibert was the only Gettysburg batter to reach base over the final two frames, drawing a one-out walk in the ninth inning. Dickinson's Beau Dana stranded Seibert at first with a strikeout and a groundout to end the game.
Â
Sophomore starting pitcher
Cole Wong (Vero Beach, Fla./Xavier) went 4.2 innings and yielded three unearned runs on three hits while striking out one batter.Â
Â
Senior
Nate Masteralexis (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) retired two batters and allowed two hits, while junior
Ken Spadaccini (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill) was charged with the loss after yielding a pair of runs in 0.2 innings.
Â
Junior
Brett Leighton (Collegeville, Pa./Pope John Paul II) pitched three scoreless innings to close out the contest on the mound, yielding one hit and fanning two batters.
Â
The Red Devils held a 7-5 edge in hits for the game and did not commit an error in the contest. Four Dickinson pitchers combined to strikeout out six batters while walking two.Â
Â
The Bullets received their five hits on the day from five different players.
Â
Gettysburg and Dickinson will close out their season series on Friday at Dickinson. First pitch of the conference matchup is set for 3:30 p.m. in Carlisle.
