Down Go the Diplomats! Bullets Remain Perfect in CC Play

No. 7 Gettysburg takes down No. 2 Franklin & Marshall 13-7

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Katie Fullowan (Lebanon, N.J./North Hunterdon) raced her way to the cage for four goals and sophomore Jordan Basso (Rye, N.Y./Rye) and junior Gabi Connor (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) each tossed in three goals as No. 7 Gettysburg (11-3, 6-0 CC) remained unbeaten in Centennial Conference play with a 13-7 victory over No. 2 Franklin & Marshall College (12-2, 5-1 CC) at Clark Field on Wednesday.

Wednesday's meeting marked Franklin & Marshall's first trip to Clark Field in four years and the Bullets welcomed the Diplomats with a free-position goal by sophomore Caroline Sullivan (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) just 46 seconds into the game. The Diplomats answered with a free-position goal by Marissa McGarrey less than a minute later.

The two teams combined for seven goals in the opening five minutes with the hosts surging to the lead with two quick strikes. Sullivan scooped the very next draw control and raced to the cage 11 seconds later for her second goal. Less than a minute later, Basso juked her defender and slid a shot past F&M goalie Emily Kitchin for a 3-1 lead at 12:44.

The Diplomats remained close with two of the next three goals to pull to 4-3 at 10:40. Sophomore Gill Cortese (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) stonewalled Lydia Cassilly to keep the one-goal differential. Gettysburg's stifling defense kept F&M from gaining any momentum, causing five-straight turnovers. Basso produced on both ends, causing turnovers on two clear attempts by the Diplomats and racking up two more goals for a 6-3 lead at 1:44.

Ally Marino scored with four seconds left in the first period to cut the margin to 6-4.

Cortese racked up three saves as Gettysburg kept F&M out of the scoring column for over 11 minutes in the second quarter. Connor provided the only goal during that stretch, catching a pass from Basso and hitting the nylon for a 7-4 advantage with 9:51 left.

Following a goal by Cassilly, Cortese halted an attempt by Madison Bray to maintain the two-goal lead. Kitchin was up to task on the other end, posting a pair of saves, but the goalie's luck ran out on the third attempt as Connor struck again with four seconds remaining in the half.

Each time F&M tried to make a push in the third quarter, Gettysburg quickly answered. A goal by Cassilly was matched by Fullowan just over a minute later early in the period. Marino again trimmed the deficit down to two with an unassisted tally at 6:30, but a penalty on the Diplomats set up Fullowan for a free-position goal to make it 10-7 at 4:51.

Gettysburg added another man-up goal following a penalty as Fullowan dished a pass inside to junior Essie Pasternak (Short Hills, N.J./Blair Academy) for an 11-7 lead late in the third quarter.

The "Katie Fullowan Show" continued into the final frame. The junior broke through the defense for another advantage goal to start the period and she scored her fourth goal to set the final score with 2:52 remaining. Defensively, Gettysburg held Franklin & Marshall to just three shots in the fourth quarter with Cortese picking up a pair of saves.

Gettysburg inched closer to earning the right to host the CC Championship on May 7-8. The regular season winner between the Bullets and Diplomats has hosted the conference finals every year since 2002. Wednesday's game also marked the 30th consecutive meeting in which both teams were ranked among the top 10 in the nation.

Gettysburg led in shots (28-19), draw controls (13-11), and ground balls (16-9). The Diplomats committed 15 turnovers compared to the Bullets' 11.

Fullowan scored three or more goals for the eighth time this season, while Connor recorded her fifth consecutive multi-goal outing. Basso has tallied at least four points in each of her last seven games and she sits just three points shy of 100 for her career.

Five Bullets tallied two caused turnovers with senior Caroline Regan (New Rochelle, N.Y./Ursuline School) tacking on a game-high four ground balls. Cortese scooped three ground balls to go along with her game-high eight saves.

Kitchin posted eight saves for F&M. Marino tallied two goals and two assists, while eCassilly posted a pair of goals.

Gettysburg hosts Muhlenberg College on Saturday, April 23, at noon. The Bullets will recognize their six seniors prior to the start of the game.
