Gettysburg, Pa. - No. 28 Haverford College closed the regular season with an 8-1 victory over Gettysburg College in Centennial Conference men's tennis action on Saturday at the Bullets Tennis Courts.
The Fords (13-5, 7-1 CC) won two of three doubles matches before taking all six singles contests in straight sets to enter the Centennial Conference playoffs as the third seed. Haverford will take on second-seeded Swarthmore College in next Saturday's semifinals.
Sophomores
Alex Kagan (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) and
Michael Zayneh (Hilton Head Island, S.C./Heritage Academy) won at No. 1 doubles to notch the lone point of the day for the Bullets (8-9, 1-7 CC).
Kagan and Zayneh defeated Jason Edmonds and Justin Minvera, 8-5 at the top flight for their ninth win of the season as a doubles pairing.
Haverford took the other two doubles matches to hold a 2-1 edge entering the singles competition.
Patrick Kley and Adam Chow bested freshman
Michael Fellman (Rockville, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) and junior
Matt Rau (Castle Rock, Col./Regis Jesuit) at No. 2, 8-1, while James McKenzie and Max Beckwith defeated seniors
Zach LaChance (Pittstown, N.J./Delaware Valley) and
Max Levy (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) at No. 3, 8-1.
In singles action, George Jiang posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over Kagan at No. 1, and Andreas Wingert downed Fellman at No. 2, 6-1, 6-4.
At No. 3, Danny Loder topped Zayneh, 6-1, 6-1, while Chow posted his second win of the day at No. 4 by defeating LaChance, 6-0, 6-1.
McKenzie added his second win for the Fords at No. 5 with a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over senior
Alec Shalk (Milton, Del./Smyrna), while Jackson Trevor scored a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Levy.
