SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Gettysburg College and Swarthmore College split a Centennial Conference doubleheader this afternoon at Clothier Baseball Field. Gettysburg won the opener 3-2, but Swarthmore won the second, 11-5.
Gettysburg is now 13-13 overall and 4-2 in conference play. Swarthmore is 11-15 overall and 4-2 in the Centennial.Â
In game one, the Bullets broke up a 2-all tie with an unearned run in the seventh inning, which proved to be the game-winning run. Pinch hitter
Aaron Kirby (Sandy Hook, Conn./St. Joseph) led off the inning with a single up the middle and he took second on a sacrifice bunt by
David Preziuso (Middletown, Del./Caravel Academy). After
Mark Seibert (Yardley, Pa./Holy Ghost Preparatory) drew a walk,
Preston Toothman (Orlando, Fla./William R. Boone) hit a ground ball to set up a tailor-made double play, but the shortstop's throw got away allowing Kirby to score from second base and Toothman took second.Â
That would be all
Brett Leighton (Collegeville, Pa./Pope John Paul II) (2-3) would need as he limited the Garnet to one hit in 3 1/3 scoreless innings. He struck out two batters.
Myles Burbank (Rye, N.Y./Rye) started on the mound for Gettysburg, scattered seven hits and allowed two runs with four strikeouts.
Matt Muir (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames), Toothman, and
JR McCloskey (Huntington, N.Y./Chaminade) each collected a single.
Edward Berry (1-3) tossed eight innings and allowed three runs, two of which were earned, on four hits for Swarthmore. He fanned seven batters.
Paul Cooke and Andrew Olsen each finished with two singles. Nate Jbara hit a solo home run.
In the second game, the Garnet used a three-run fifth inning to take a 7-4 lead in route to an 11-5 victory.
The Bullets struck first with a three-run third inning. A
Tristan Neels (San Diego, Calif./Francis W. Parker) RBI-single started the inning and
Andrew Decker (Baltimore, Md./Towson) followed with a two-run double to right-center.
Swarthmore rallied in the home half of the third and took a 4-3 lead after a three-run home run by Austin Burgess.
Muir's RBI-double in the top of the fifth knotted the game at 4-all.
But a Michael Sepe two-run single in the bottom of the fifth put the Garnet on top for good.
Swarthmore added four more runs in the sixth.
Kyle Miller (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) collected a pair of singles and drew a walk for Gettysburg. Muir went 2-for-4 with the double, one run batted in and he scored a run.
Cole Wong (Vero Beach, Fla./Xavier) (0-1) allowed three runs on three hits in 2 1/3 innings in relief to get the loss.
Burgess hit two home runs, collected five RBI and scored three runs for the Garnet. Sepe went 2-for-4 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored.
Jeremy Jensen (2-0) was one of seven Swarthmore pitchers used. He tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings and was credited with the win.
Up next for Gettysburg is a conference game at Johns Hopkins University on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Baltimore, Maryland. Â
