Baseball Closes Season With Sweep

Bullets baseball team finishes season with series sweep of Ursinus College on Senior Day

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College baseball team closed out its 2022 season in style by sweeping Ursinus in a double during their regular season on Saturday afternoon at Kirchhoff Field. The Bullets bested Ursinus 13-7 in game one before earning a 10-2 triumph in game two, outscoring the Bears 23-9 between the two games.

The Bullets will wrap up their regular season with an overall record of 18-20 and 9-9 in Centennial Conference action after completing the sweep on senior day. Meanwhile, the Bears concluded their season at 12-26 overall and 4-14 in Centennial action.

The day started with the honoring of its 8 Seniors. Andrew Decker (Baltimore, M.D./ Townson) Matt Muir (South Easton Mass./Oliver Ames) Teo Torrado (New York, N.Y./ Plolytech Country Day)      Shane Manieri (Harleysillve, PA./Lasalle College) Nathan Masteralexis (Amherst, Mass. Northfield Mout Hermon) Tim Fay (Easthampton, Mass./Williston Northhampton)  Myles Burbank (Rye, N.Y./Rye) and Sammy Sestito (SeaGrit, N.J./Saint Rose)

Gettysburg game one starting pitcher, junior Andrew Weinbrum (Weston, Conn./Weston) worked around a bases loaded jam behind a pair of one-out hits in the top of the first inning to set the stage for the Bullets to get on the board early. Junior Kyle Miller (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) led the bottom half off with a single and advanced to third from a wild pitch plus a single. Sophomore Tristan Neels (San Diego, Calif./Francis W. Parker) drove in Miller with a sacrifice fly to put the Bullets ahead 1-0. Ursinus took their first lead of the game in the top of the second at 2-1 off a pair of doubles, but Gettysburg responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the second. The Bullets had runners on first and third with one out and scratched their run across after drawing the Bears into a lengthy rundown attempt following a strikeout. The rundown gave junior Preston Toothman (Orlando, Fla./William R. Boone) enough time to score from third before the final out was recorded.

Ursinus pulled ahead 3-2 in the top of the fifth inning behind a leadoff triple before the Bullets broke the game open by scoring seven runs on five hits and two errors to go up 9-2. After Junior JR McCloskey (Huntington, N.Y./Chaminade) walked to start the inning, three-straight Bullets recorded singles to eventually bring in McCloskey plus another run. An error then loaded the bases for senior Andrew Decker (Baltimore, Md./Towson) to single and drive in the third run of the inning. Sophomore David Preziuso (Middletown, Del./Caravel Academy) followed by ripping a two-run single up the middle to push the lead to 7-3 before an out was recorded. McCloskey drove in the sixth run during his second at-bat of the inning and the Bullets scored their final run by again tricking the Bears into lengthy rundown attempt to score a runner on third base.

The Bears cut the Bullets lead down to 9-5 in the top of the seventh following a two-out two-run double, but Gettysburg once again had answer to Ursinus runs scored by recording four of their own in the bottom of the seventh. Four-straight singles helped drive in the first run of the inning before a sacrifice fly from a deep foul out made it 11-5. Two-straight fielding errors then brought in the final two runs making it a 13-5 game. Ursinus added two final runs in the top of the ninth before the Bullets closed out the win in game one. Senior Nate Masteralexis (Amherst, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon) earned the win for Gettysburg after allowing three earned runs on four hits while striking out seven and walking two in six innings of relief.

It was the Bullets that once again grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first to start game two after an errant throw scored senior Matt Muir (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) from second base to make it 1-0. Ursinus took advantage of a pair of Bullets errors in the top of the third to tie the game at one and pulled ahead by scoring a run from a single in the top of the sixth. Bears starting pitcher Casey Murphy kept the Bullets off balance until the seventh inning when Gettysburg finally got to him for two runs and went back in front, 3-2. Gettysburg advanced runners to second and third base with two outs and Miller smashed a triple to right center to score both runs while knocking Murphy out of the game.

Gettysburg jumped on the Bears bullpen in the bottom of the eighth inning as they broke the game open with seven runs off just three hits while batting around in an inning for the second time in the doubleheader. A double from Neels and walk by Decker helped put runners at second and third base following a successful sacrifice bunt. Junior Matthew Peipher (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) pinch hit for the Bullets and roped a double to right center to score both runs. McCloskey drove in another run with a sacrifice fly before a pair of walks loaded the bases. The Bullets fourth run of the inning came around from a passed ball and Muir worked a walk to load the bases again. Neels cleared the bases with a double to left center to cap the doubleheader sweep for Gettysburg.

Sophomore pitcher Patrick Clementi (King of Prussia, Pa./Devon Prep) earned the win in game two after allowing just one earned run on seven hits with four strikeouts in 5.2 innings out of the bullpen. Miller combined to go 5-of-9 from the plate in the two games and drove in two runs while scoring a trio. Muir went 4-of-8 from the dish in the two games with one RBI and three runs scored. Preziuso went 2-of-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored in game one while Neels went 2-of-4 with three RBI's and one run scored in game two.
